NFC WEST San Francisco isn't content

Sunday's win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was bady needed.
VINDICATOR STAFF REPORT
Despite Sunday's 24-7 upset victory over defending Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay, San Francisco 49ers coach Dennis Erickson says overconfidence shouldn't be a problem for this week's game in the Arizona desert.
"When you scrutinize our record, there's no need for anyone to be feeling overconfident," said Erickson of the 49ers.
Sunday, the 49ers, 3-4 and in third place in the NFC West, will play division rival Arizona (1-5), which is coming off an open week.
"Arizona beat Green Bay the last time they played at home," Erickson said Tuesday.
"Hopefully by now, our team realizes that every game in this league has the potential to be close."
Finally
Erickson said 49ers finally "played up to our capabilities" in inflicting the worst loss the Bucs have suffered since Jon Gruden became coach last year.
"It's a win we needed badly to keep us in the hunt, but we've got to move on," Erickson said.
The big difference for the 49ers, who have lost three games by a combined five points, was the play of the patched-up offensive line. Rookie tackle Kwame Harris replaced left tackle Derrick Deese (ankle) and second-year Kyle Kosier subbed for left guard Eric Heitmann (ankle).
"They're just starting to gel as a unit, especially on that left side," Erickson said.
"Harris has seven games under his belt, so he's really not a rookie anymore. They have a lot more experience together and it's starting to bring some unity."
The duo teamed with center Jeremy Newberry, right guard Ron Stone and right tackle Scott Gragg to help keep Tampa Bay's Anthony McFarland and Simeon Rice away from quarterback Jeff Garcia, who passed for 253 yards and two touchdowns.
Wide receiver Terrell Owens caught six passes for 152 yards, including a 75-yard touchdown that featured elusive running after the catch.
Contained Sapp
The line also contained defensive tackle Warren Sapp and the linebackers well enough for running backs Garrison Hearst and Kevan Barlow to combine for 192 of the 49ers' 212 rushing yards.
"They're a good combination for us but the unsung hero was fullback Fred Beasley, who serves as lead blocker when we are in two-back sets," Erickson said. "Their efforts opened up the passing game."
Erickson also cited defensive tackle Bryant Young and defensive end Andre Carter for allowing the 49ers to back off the blitz.
"We changed it up because we had been blitzing all the time," Erickson said.
"We played more of a standard zone and it worked because the front four was able to create pressure."
In the Bucs' first five games, quarterback Brad Johnson had been sacked once.
Carter and defensive end Chidi Ahantou each got to him in the game at 3-Com Park.
The pressure forced Johnson into three interceptions, by cornerbacks Ahmed Plummer and Mike Rumph and linebacker Julian Peterson.
Questionable
Erickson isn't expecting three injured players against the Cardinals. Deese and Heitmann are listed as questionable, as is rookie defensive tackle Anthony Adams (turf toe).
"There's a possibility they could play, but I wouldn't count on it," Erickson said.
"We have a lot of bumps and bruises, so a lot of guys are going to sit out some practices this week."
Next week the 49ers play host to the St. Louis Rams in a rematch of San Francisco's 27-24 overtime loss in Week 2. Following an open week, the 49ers play host to the Pittsburgh Steelers Nov. 17 in the Monday night game.
