911 funding measure gets backing from Columbiana County groups

LISBON -- With the Nov. 4 general election less than two weeks away, Columbiana County commissioners say a ballot measure to help pay for an improved 911 system is getting plenty of support.
Commissioners said Wednesday that several area organizations have adopted resolutions backing the proposed 50-cent monthly telephone surcharge, which is expected to raise about $270,000 annually toward the cost of a new system.
About $400,000 on a one-time basis also is available through the state.
The county already has 911, but it is one of the few in the state that lacks a database that instantly tells emergency personnel the address and other key details about the location from which a 911 call is placed.
Supporters of the improved system say it will make emergency responses more effective.
No organized opposition to the plan has emerged.
Commissioners said organizations that have adopted support resolutions are:
UGuilford Lake Civic Association.
UColumbiana County Fire Chief's Association.
UColumbiana County Chapter No. 59 of Public Employee Retirees Inc.
UColumbiana County Firefighters' Association.
USalem Ladies Auxiliary.
UColumbiana County Farm Bureau.
