WASHINGTON -- With a voice vote Tuesday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill to make Ashtabula, Trumbull and Mahoning counties part of the federally designated Appalachian region.
This would make them eligible for greater federal funding to help with their economic recovery, backers said.
Columbiana County is already part of the Appalachian region.
The bill, H.R. 2535, the Economic Development Administration Reauthorization Act of 2003, was written by U.S. Rep. Steven C. LaTourette, R-14, of Madison.
It also asks the EDA to conduct a feasibility study on bringing NASCAR to the Youngstown area.
The measure now goes to the Senate.
