McCabe named by SVC
Bob McCabe of Cardinal Mooney was selected as Steel Valley Conference football player of the week.
McCabe, a linebacker, recorded 13 tackles, including seven tackles for loss and four sacks, in the Cardinals' 24-21 victory over Ursuline Friday.
Officiating class
Persons wishing to receive first-time OHSAA certification as a basketball official can register through Friday. Classes are held weekly.

DeJacimo ties for 2nd
AURORA -- Former Howland High and YSU standout Ron DeJacimo finished tied for second in the Northern Ohio PGA event at Barrington Golf Club Monday.
DeJacimo, now an assistant professional at Barrington, shot an even-par 72, three shots behind winner Michell Camp of Walden Golf Club.
Scott Karabin, head professional at Squaw Creek Country Club, tied for 9th with a 74, while former area standout John Lucansky, now at Ashtabula Country Club, tied for 19th with a 77.
East High graduatea coach in Colorado
DENVER -- Dwight Berry, a 1988 graduate of East High School, was recently hired as girls head basketball coach at Denver East High School.
Berry coached the freshman girls team to a 19-0 record and the city championship in 2000. Denver East was 36-3 over two seasons. He also served as an assistant football coach.
Berry was hired by Denver Public Schools in 1999 as a student advisor at Denver East and is currently at Denver Children's Home as the youth treatment counselor and summer school lead instructor.
He graduated from Trinidad State (Colo.) Junior College and earned a bachelor's degree from Regis University.

Columbiana teamssweep titles
SEBRING -- Columbiana won both the varsity and junior varsity championships of the Mahoning Valley Jr. Football League Saturday.
In the junior varsity division, Columbiana (9-0) defeated Western Reserve 28-8, for the Clippers' third straight league championship and fourth in the last five years.
Columbiana has won 20 straight games. Cameron Schrode rushed for 83 yards and two TDs, while Walker Fowler had 74 yards with one TD and Mardell Halas added 69 yards, one TD and an extra point. Columbiana rushed for 226 yards and Schrode also threw an extra point pass to Kyle Shaffer. Nick Roncone had six tackles while Jeffrey Davidson and Steve Slater each had four. Fowler and BJ White each recovered a WR fumble.
For Western Reserve (6-3), Vinnie Pizzuto scored on a 50-yard TD run.
In the varsity division, Columbiana defeated Western Reserve, 24-6.
Justin Finley scored two touchdowns and an extra point for Columbiana (7-2), and had five tackles, two sacks and forced two fumbles. Michael Kauffman converted two extra points and had an interception. Jonathon Ritchey and Kenny Shea recovered fumbles.
For Western Reserve (8-1), Eric Kennehan had a 51-yard run.

Penn State punter found not guilty
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A district justice threw out a disorderly conduct charge against Penn State freshman punter Jeremy Kapinos because of a lack of evidence.
Kapinos, 19, was one of three men charged with disorderly conduct and underage drinking after a Sept. 7 fight at a party in an apartment complex.

Yankees charged
BOSTON -- Police have decided to seek assault and battery charges against Yankees reliever Jeff Nelson and right fielder Karim Garcia for a bullpen brawl with a Red Sox employee.
Sorenstam inducted
ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. -- Annika Sorenstam was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. Sorenstam is the first foreign-born player to get into the Hall of Fame through the LPGA Tour. She was inducted along with Nick Price, Japanese pioneer Chako Higuchi and the late Leo Diegel, a two-time PGA champion.
Azeri out
Reigning Horse of the Year Azeri will not run in the Breeders' Cup on Saturday because of an illness. Azeri became ill after her loss in the Lady's Secret Breeders' Cup Handicap at Santa Anita on Sept. 28 -- the 5-year-old mare's first loss in 12 starts.
