YOUNGSTOWN -- Tanisha Wainwright, 19, of Hilton Avenue was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center with a gunshot wound to her left back. Wainwright had been a passenger in her friend's car Sunday afternoon, parked near Pearl Street on the city's East Side, when a man they knew, Jordan M. Robinson, 19, got in the back seat, reports show. As the three talked, a gun fired, police said. Robinson, of North Pearl Street, was later found and arrested on charges of felonious assault and mishandling a firearm in a motor vehicle. Robinson told police the shooting was an accident.
Gunmen abduct, rob 4
YOUNGSTOWN -- Four or more gunmen wearing ski masks, gloves, bulletproof vests and black clothes with yellow police lettering on the front of their shirts forced a man and three women into a van on Elm Street about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, reports show. The victims told police that they were driven around for 20 minutes then placed in a mobile home, handcuffed to a contraption in the floor, and questioned about the whereabouts of someone whose name they could not remember. At 4:30 a.m. Sunday, the four were returned to the 900 block of Elm. The crime was reported to police at 10 a.m. Reports show a variety of items were stolen from the victims, including cash, cell phones, cigarettes, gold chain, credit cards and more.
Seeking donations
NORTH JACKSON -- Representatives of the Jackson Township Volunteer Fire Department will be going door to door to township homes in the next few weeks seeking $20 donations to help pay for fire department equipment, according to Fire Chief Wayne McDougal. Donors will be given a complimentary certificate entitling them to have an 11-by-14-inch color family photograph taken at the fire station, 229 N. Salem-Warren Road, between 2 and 8 p.m. Nov. 21, he said.
Probing pair of break-ins
POLAND -- Village police are investigating two house break-ins on Botsford Drive that they say are related. Police said someone got into the two homes through unlocked doors and took cash, purses and small items while the residents were sleeping. The burglaries were discovered Sunday morning.
Retail theft charge
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Police said a Campbell, Ohio, woman tried to steal more than $4,000 worth of goods from the Wal-Mart store in Pine Township by placing items inside a baby car seat box. Margaret E. Gratz, of Tenth Street, was arrested at 7:40 p.m. Saturday at the store. She was charged with retail theft and remained in Mercer County jail today after failing to post $25,000 bond.
Arrested after fleeing
AUSTINTOWN -- A New Philadelphia man was arrested after running from police Saturday. Paul Tornero, 35, was charged with obstructing official business and resisting arrest. Police received a call that Tornero had forced a Niles woman into his truck at about 11:30 a.m. at a state Route 46 truck stop. Police later found Tornero and the woman, who had visible injuries to her head and face, in the truck outside a tavern on West Webb Road. Tornero ran from police, only to be found later by police at the truck stop. He is being held in the Mahoning County Jail pending an arraignment. The woman was taken to a hospital. Police also found three knives in Tornero's truck.
Special meeting set
NORTH LIMA -- South Range Board of Education will have a special meeting at 7 a.m. Tuesday in board offices at 12037 South Ave. Ext., to adopt a resolution to call for bonds to reduce the district's debt.
Vandalism in Canfield
CANFIELD -- Obscenities were spray-painted on the Canfield High School victory bell after the Friday loss of the football game to Poland Seminary High School. The bell was spray-painted blue and white, the colors of the Poland school.
Counterfeit items found
CANFIELD -- Police confiscated 83 suspected counterfeit CDs and 35 suspected counterfeit DVDs from a car that had been pulled over for a traffic stop. Fred McCall Jr., 46, of Hart Street, Akron, was charged with criminal simulation. McCall was a passenger in the car, pulled over for having no front license plate about 4 p.m. Thursday on West Main Street. The CDs and DVDs were found in a suitcase in the back seat. The driver, Douglas Johnson, 47, of Bittaker Street, Akron, was charged with driving under suspension, not wearing a seat belt and not having a front license plate.
