NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Two Youngstown men were arrested on drug charges after a traffic stop in Lawrence County. Eugene Frazier, 19, and Stephen Tate, 18, were stopped at 12:04 a.m. Sunday on U.S. Route 422 at Pulaski Road in Union Township by Pennsylvania State Police.
Police said Frazier was charged with driving under the influence of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia. Tate was charged with possession of marijuana with intent to deliver and possession of drug paraphernalia. Their addresses were not available from police. They are in Lawrence County jail and were to be arraigned later today.
State grant awardedfor railroad projects
MERCER, Pa. -- The Bessemer & amp; Lake Erie Railroad has been awarded a $750,000 state grant for a major improvement project in Mercer County and the surrounding region.
Sen. Robert Robbins of Greenville, R-50th, said the money will be used to rehabilitate the railroad's main line and passing tracks and the reconstruction of 75 miles of track in Mercer, Butler and Allegheny counties. The track work is needed to protect the 8,500 industrial jobs that the railroad supports in Pennsylvania, Robbins said.
Retail theft charge
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Police said a Campbell, Ohio, woman tried to steal more than $4,000 worth of goods from the Wal-Mart store in Pine Township by placing them inside a baby car seat box. Margaret E. Gratz, of Tenth Street, was arrested at 7:40 p.m. Saturday at the store. Police said she had paid the retail value of the car seat shown on the box but had filled the box with other, more expensive items. She was charged with retail theft and remained in Mercer County jail today on $25,000 bond.
Junior Scholars Program
ALLIANCE -- Mount Union College will host the Junior Scholars Program on Tuesday.
This is the 18th year for the program, where about 100 gifted high school juniors and seniors are invited to campus to participate in 90-minute sessions led by Mount Union College faculty.
MUC invited 10 area high schools, including West Branch.
The sessions will include "Microbes, Plagues and History," led by Dr. Charles Brueske, professor of biology and "The Magic of Theatre Makeup: Burns, Cuts, Abrasions, and Bruises or How to Not Really Injure Actors and Have Them Still Like You After the Play is Over," led by Deborah Lotsof, associate professor of theater.
The program's goal is to present ideas that are not normally included in the high-school curriculum, let gifted students interact with other students of the same ability, to expose students to the academic and intellectual challenges offered on college campuses, and to allow an opportunity for in-depth exploration into a specific-interest area.
Divorce clinic offered

Education seminars are offered to educate victims of domestic violence about available options and local resources. One of the goals is to help the victim of domestic violence empower herself through knowledge. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
'Critical' after shooting
YOUNGSTOWN -- Tanisha Wainwright, 19, of Hilton Avenue was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center with a gunshot wound to her left back.
Wainwright had been a passenger in her friend's car Sunday afternoon, parked near Pearl Street on the city's East Side, when a man they knew, Jordan M. Robinson, 19, got in the back seat, reports show. As the three talked, a gun fired, police said. Robinson, of North Pearl Street, was later found and arrested on charges of felonious assault and mishandling a firearm in a motor vehicle. When taken into custody, Robinson told police the shooting was an accident.
