CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- Bobby Bowden isn't chasing Joe Paterno anymore.
Chris Rix threw a 79-yard touchdown pass to Craphonso Thorpe and Xavier Beitia kicked four field goals Saturday night as No. 7 Florida State gave Bowden his 338th career coaching victory, 19-14 over Virginia.
The victory moved the 73-year-old Bowden into a tie with Penn State's Paterno for first place on the Division I-A coaching victories list.
The Cavaliers (4-3, 3-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) turned the ball over twice and lost 17 yards when the ball was snapped prematurely on a key late third-down play, the huge loss killing Virginia's chances.
The Seminoles (6-1, 5-0) then ran out the clock, driving inside the Cavaliers 10 as Virginia burned its timeouts before time ran out.
Florida State also won with defense, holding the Cavaliers to minus 5 rushing yards on just nine attempts as Virginia tried to win on the arm of Matt Schaub. He was 39-for-53 for 326 yards and two touchdowns, but was still setting his offense when the biggest snap of the night sailed by.
Alvin Pearman, starting in place of injured Wali Lundy, set a school record with 16 catches for 134 yards for the Cavaliers, and Heath Miller caught nine for 77 yards. Each also pulled in a touchdown pass from Schaub, with Miller's 8-yarder midway through the third quarter making it 16-14.
But Beitia added his fourth field goal, a 39-yarder, later in the quarter and the Seminoles' defense made all the stops it needed at the end.
No. 2 Miami 52, Temple 14
MIAMI -- Jarrett Payton had his first 100-yard game as Miami beat Temple for the 12th consecutive time.

No. 4 Georgia 27, Vanderbilt 8
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Michael Cooper, Tyson Browning and Ronnie Powell had second-half touchdown runs as Georgia rallied from a 2-0 halftime deficit to beat Vanderbilt, clinching the Commodores' 21st consecutive losing season.
The Commodores (1-7, 0-4) sacked David Greene six times and intercepted a pass in holding the SEC's third-best offense to 343 yards. Georgia (6-1, 4-1) had been averaging 408.5 yards and had just 64 yards by halftime, including only 8 in the second quarter.

No. 10 LSU 33, South Carolina 7
COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Matt Mauck threw two touchdown passes and LSU bounced back from its first loss. The Tigers (6-1, 3-1 SEC) freshman Justin Vincent, playing because of injuries to starters Joseph Addai and Shyrone Carey, had two 1-yard TD runs and fellow freshman Alley Broussard gained 108 yards on 19 carries.
Mauck was 24-of-30 passing for 199 yards, while Broussard, seeing his first-ever SEC action, became the first to gain 100 yards against South Carolina (4-3, 1-3) this season. Vincent added 77 yards as LSU piled up 263 yards on the ground.
Florida 33, No. 11 Arkansas 28
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- Chris Leak threw short and let his receivers and ball carriers run long as Florida beat Arkansas.
After Keiwan Ratliff's 44-yard interception return for a touchdown put Florida up 33-7 early in the fourth quarter, Arkansas scored 21 points in three quick drives. The Razorbacks' third roughing-the-passer penalty wiped out an interception with a minute left, killing Arkansas' last chance.
No. 16 TCU 27, UAB 24
FORT WORTH, Texas -- Lonta Hobbs scored a 10-yard run early in the fourth quarter, helping TCU remain unbeaten.
The Horned Frogs started nine drives within 60 yards of the end zone and managed only two touchdowns and four field goals. The kicks weren't all gimmes, either, as Nick Browne nailed 48- and 49-yarders.
No. 18 Nebraska 48, Texas A & amp;M 12
LINCOLN, Neb. -- Jammal Lord ran for two touchdowns and Nebraska equaled a school record by forcing eight turnovers.
The Cornhuskers (6-1, 2-1 Big 12) picked on the Aggies' Reggie McNeal all day, intercepting three passes and recovering two fumbles. The last time Nebraska collected eight turnovers was 1991, against Colorado State.

AMES, Iowa -- Roy Williams caught a touchdown pass and set up two other scores with big plays, including a pass of his own.
Vince Young threw a touchdown pass in his first start for the Longhorns (5-2, 2-1 Big 12), Cedric Benson ran for 140 yards and three TDs and Texas played inspired defense. The Longhorns had five sacks and held Iowa State (2-5, 0-3) to 45 yards in building a 27-0 halftime lead.
No. 23 Oklahoma St. 51, Texas Tech 49
STILLWATER, Okla. -- Jon Holland intercepted B.J. Symons' pass with 1:05 remaining as Oklahoma State ended a furious comeback attempt.
Tatum Bell ran for a career-high 238 yards, with TD runs of 95, 48 and 5 yards, and the Cowboys (6-1, 2-1 Big 12) scored on their first eight possessions to take a 48-21 lead into the fourth quarter.
Symons was 42-of-67 for 552 yards, his sixth straight game with more than 400 yards. He threw five touchdown passes and ran for another score, but also had two interceptions and missed several open receivers.
Texas Tech, the nation's second-highest scoring team behind top-ranked Oklahoma, got back in it with four fourth-quarter touchdowns. The Red Raiders (5-2, 2-1) drove to the Oklahoma State 40 before Holland's interception.
