Flower defeats her classmate for state crown



COLUMBUS (AP) -- Upper Arlington sophomore Kirsten Flower defeated classmate Christine Johnston 6-1, 6-1 Saturday to win the Division I singles title at the girls state tennis tournament.
Flower and Johnston won a state championship last year as doubles partners. Flower reached the finals with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Canton GlenOak's Jacqueline Lee, while Johnston advanced by defeating Centerville's Kelly Douple 6-3, 6-1.
Upper Arlington also captured its second straight Division I doubles title, this time behind the team of Kelsey Linville and Madora Mak. They defeated Richfield Revere's Megan Gray and Carly Newman 6-1, 6-1.
Div. II
In Div. II singles, Kendell Swenson of Shaker Heights Laurel captured the title with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Jamie Nelson of Wooster Triway.
Hamilton Badin's Kylee Wiegand and Jessica Flannery were the division's doubles winners, defeating Cuyahoga Falls Walsh Jesuit's Molly McCluskey and Sara Crane 6-2, 6-1.
Walsh Jesuit sent two teams to the semifinals. The tandem of Lindsey Fleissner and Ashley Kurtz won the third-place match 1-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Lizzie Genter and Silpa Yalamanchili of Cincinnati Indian Hill.
