COLUMBIANA CORNER Firefighters tell pupils: 'Get out and stay out'
Sebring Fire Department's fire prevention committee has been busy making fire prevention presentations at area preschools and elementary schools.
The theme for the department's fire prevention activities is "Get Out and Stay Out," a new program that teaches children to never go back into their house or any other burning building for any reason, and to have a safe meeting place outside so adults can know that everyone has escaped safely.
Kindergarten, first-, second- and third-grade pupils learn the fire safety basics, planning and practicing home escape plans, how to crawl low below smoke and how to stop, drop and roll if clothing catches fire.
Fourth- and fifth-grade pupils learn about the potential hazards of flammable liquids, vapors and gases. They are taught proper handling, use and storage of everyday flammable household items.
Tim Royer of the state fire marshal's office shows sixth-grade pupils the consequences of juvenile fire-setting.
