OHIO Dalton snaps Smithville's 22-game winning streak

After losing its first game the week before, Dalton stopped Smithville.

A week after Dalton lost its chance for an undefeated regular season, the Bulldogs ended Smithville's drive for perfection.
Jeremy Wenger kicked a 20-yard field goal with 37 seconds remaining to give Dalton a 22-20 victory Friday night, ending Smithville's 22-game winning streak in the regular season. The loss dropped the Smithies (7-1) from second to seventh in the Division V state rankings.
Dalton's shot at a perfect record ended a week earlier with a 44-0 loss to Apple Creek Waynedale.
The Dalton-Smithville rivalry is shaping up to be one of the state's best.
Smithville handed Dalton both its losses in 2002 -- 21-19 in the regular season and 35-8 in the playoffs. The wins helped the Smithies reach the Division V state title game, where they lost 33-18 to Marion Pleasant.
Smithville lost to Dalton (7-1) this time because it couldn't stop the Bulldogs' running game in the closing moments.
Derek Jackson carried the ball 13 straight times for 52 yards on the final drive, setting up Wenger's game-winning kick on fourth-and-goal at the 3. It was the team's first field goal this season.

Bluffton freshman quarterback Ricky Matter, the brother of Ohio State women's basketball player Caity Matter, completed 30 of 48 passes for 326 yards and a score in a 32-28 win over Convoy Crestview; Jason Bodart's fifth touchdown pass came in the third overtime and gave Bascom Hopewell-Loudon a 41-35 win over unbeaten Sycamore Mohawk; Bloomdale Elmwood's Kyle Rhoad threw a school-record six touchdown passes in only 13 completions (23 attempts) during a 55-8 win over Gibsonburg;
Tom Schiltz's 52-yard TD pass to Jamaal Akbar with 1:06 left gave Cincinnati Winton Woods a 16-15 win over Loveland; Cincinnati La Salle's Anthony Kummer passed for 269 yards and three TDs and rushed for 134 yards and a score in a 41-24 win over Cincinnati Purcell Marian; Shenandoah's Keith Selock threw for 281 yards and five touchdowns while completing 9 of 16 passes in a 56-7 rout of Beallsville.
