LEHMAN, Pa. (AP) -- Simple assault charges were filed against four high school football players

LEHMAN, Pa. (AP) -- Simple assault charges were filed against four high school football players accused of injuring a teammate in a hazing incident that the victim said was prompted by his poor performance in a game, officials said.
Adam Harris, a 15-year-old sophomore quarterback, sustained a broken jaw and a bruised shoulder and elbow in the September assault, which occurred after practice. He underwent surgery to have his jaw wired shut.
Harris has said he was taped to a chair while four of his teammates rubbed on his face an ointment used to alleviate muscle pain. The boys were wheeling the chair into a gymnasium when it got stuck and flipped, sending him face-first to the floor.
He has said he believed he was attacked because he had thrown several interceptions in a game.
Juvenile hearings for the four students will be held before Luzerne County Court of Common Pleas Judge Mark Ciavarella. No date has been set.
"Incidents that result in injuries to students cannot be tolerated," District Attorney David Lupas said in a statement Wednesday. "All students should be able to feel safe in their schools, and parents should not have to worry about the safety of their children when those children are in school."
Also on Wednesday, a fourth student accused in the incident agreed to accept the school district's punishment, said district solicitor Charles Coslett. The other three had previously accepted the punishment.
Coslett, citing privacy laws, said he could not reveal the punishments. It was public knowledge, he said, that the four were suspended from school following the incident.
"I think we need to take a deep breath and look at this incident and see what we can learn out of this ... to make sure that horse play doesn't get out of hand like and cause injury to a fellow teammate," Coslett said.
