JOHN KOVACH | College Hlebovy has role in Hiram's two volleyball records



HIRAM -- Jennifer Hlebovy, a freshman hitter for the Hiram College volleyball team from Boardman High, helped the Terriers to set two school records in last Tuesday's win over Ursuline College in Pepper Pike.
Hlebovy contributed a career-high 21 digs and 10 kills as Hiram registered its ninth straight win and 19th victory overall this season to establish the two school records.
This marked the third straight year that Hiram has set a school record for single-season wins under coach Ellen Dempsey.
Entering this past weekend's play, Hiram was 19-4 overall and led the North Coast Athletic Conference with a 5-0 mark.
Hlebovy ranks No. 4 on the team in kills with 192 and No. 3 in digs with 241. She has had double-doubles (double figures in kills and digs) in five matches so far this year.
In Hiram's win over Kenyon the week before last that tied both school records, Hlebovy had a career-high 16 kills with nine digs.
An education major, Hlebovy is the daughter of Mary and Dennis Hlebovy. Her sister, Celeste Hlebovy, is a senior on the Indiana State women's basketball team.
Other Hiram leaders
Also leading the Terriers' record-setting win over Ursuline were sophomore Beth Groselle with 17 digs and 14 kills, freshman outside hitter Michelle Kozempa with 15 kills, sophomore middle hitter Shana Toth with 13 kills, and senior All-NCAC middle hitter Bobbi Wymer with 12 kills.
Meanwhile, senior setter Charity Norman had 17 digs and 61 assists, and built her career assists to 3,498 to rank No. 7 in the NCAC.
Toth leads the team in kills (286) and blocks (106), while junior Monique Alston is tops in digs (255). Other team leaders are Norman in assists (849) and Wymer in service aces (45).
Frum has strong start
ATHENS -- Drew Frum, a junior on the Ohio University cross country team from Poland High, got off to a strong start this season by posting the Bobcats' fastest times in three of their first four meets.
Frum tied his best time ever with 25:18.50 to win overall individual honors and lead the Bobcats to 21 points and victory in the Ohio University Invitational. It was the team's only home meet of the season.
Frum also led OU in two other meets. He had 25:43.18 to place eighth overall at the Greater Louisville Classic, and a 25:18.00 for fifth overall in the Toledo Invitational.
Last year, Frum had a 25:39 to take 39th at the Mid-American Conference Championships. He placed seventh at the Mel Brodt Invitational in 25:54.
The year before last, Frum was selected as OU's co-freshman Most Valuable Performer. He finished 52nd at the MAC Championships in 26:26. His best time of that season was 26:17 at William and Mary.
While at Poland High, Frum was all-state twice in cross country and three times in track. He was a member of Poland's 2000 state championship team.
He is the son of Mary and Dan Frum.
Also on the OU team in a coaching capacity is Justin Kempe, from Austintown Fitch High. Kempe, who formerly ran cross country and track for OU, is in his first year as a student assistant coach.
Hulea at Villanova
VILLANOVA, Pa. -- Brian Hulea, a sophomore linebacker for the Villanova University football team from Canfield High, is having another outstanding season for the Wildcats.
Hulea (6-1, 235) leads Villanova in total tackles with 77 and unassisted tackles with 52. His 77 tackles also rank No. 1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference.
He was named an Atlantic 10 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Wildcats' 21-17 win over Rhode Island two Saturdays ago.
In that game, Hulea came up with a career-high 18 tackles, including 12 solo stops, to key the Villanova defense and help the Wildcats to remain undefeated.
Villanova (6-0) was ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division I-AA rankings as of last week.
The Wildcats are 4-0 in the Atlantic 10 Conference to share first place with Delaware and Massachusetts.
Villanova had an off date Saturday and will resume play next Saturday at home to Massachusetts at 3:30 p.m.
