COLLEGE FOOTBALL Louisville's Shelton breaks loose on ground
He rushed for 128 yards and scored three touchdowns in a 47-28 win over Tulane.
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Eric Shelton munched on an orange at halftime of Louisville's 47-28 win over Tulane on Friday night.
He still had pieces caught in his teeth in the third quarter and had to pick them away with his fingers.
That was about all that bothered him during the game.
Shelton rushed for 128 yards and scored three touchdowns for the second straight game.
The Florida State transfer averaged less than 60 yards rushing in the Cardinals' last three games, but exploded against Tulane's 113th-ranked rushing defense.
"I expected to do what I did," said the 6-foot-3, 245-pound Shelton. "We did what we wanted to do and it turned out the way we wanted it to."
The Cardinals had 288 rushing yards in the game.
"Much praise to the offensive line," Shelton said. "I just ran behind them. We just put it all together."
Had lot of help
Michael Bush had two touchdown runs and Kerry Rhodes had two interceptions, returning the second one 33 yards for a score as Louisville (6-1, 2-1 Conference USA) continued its best start since 2001.
"We're slowly putting it together," Shelton said. "Hopefully, we can add to it.
The highlight for Tulane (3-4, 1-3) was a record-setting night for Mewelde Moore, Conference USA's career leader in yards rushing, who ran for 123 yards and a touchdown and had 57 receiving yards.
Moore's 180 all-purpose yards pushed him over 6,000 for his career. Moore also became the second player in Division I-A history to go over 4,000 yards rushing and 2,000 yards receiving, joining Stanford's Darrin Nelson.
"Every game, every week, he's the most consistent, most productive player I've ever had," Tulane coach Chris Scelfo said. "He blocks hard, he runs hard and he plays hard."
A lot of yards
The Cardinals piled up 500 yards against the nation's most porous defense.
Stefan LeFors got the Cardinals rolling on their second possession with a 43-yard pass to J.R. Russell five minutes into the game. Shelton finished the drive with an eight-yard touchdown run with 8:05 left in the opening quarter.
Shelton rushed for 70 yards and three touchdowns in the Cardinals' 34-10 win over Army last week.
Shelton has been bothered by an injured left big toe recently, but said he's fully recovered now.
"This is the best I've felt in a while," he said.
He had a 36-yard run, his longest of the season, to set up Bush's 14-yard TD run on the first play of the second quarter.
