COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Wooster shot an opening-round 314 Friday to take a two-stroke lead over Copley at the Division I boys state golf tournament.
Joe Spelman shot a three-over 75 to lead Wooster, which won its only state title in 1980. The Generals also got rounds of 78 from Jon Lamana and 79 from Chris Carey to hold off Copley, which shot a 316.
Copley's Ryan Gutowski had Friday's top score with a 73.
Lewis Center Olentangy's Kyle Morris shot a 74 and is one stroke behind Gutowski in the medalist race. Morris is the top individual returning from last year's tournament, when he placed 13th.
Two-time defending champion Cleveland St. Ignatius and last year's runner-up, Centerville, did not qualify for this year's tournament.
In the girls tournament, Cincinnati Ursuline Academy shot a 331 Friday to take a one-stroke lead over defending champion Cincinnati Mount Notre Dame. Kelsey Lindenschmidt led Ursuline with a four-over par 75. Allison Mayborg shot a 78 for Ursuline, the 1999 state champion.
Rachel Quinlan-Waters and Colleen Cully each shot 82 for Mount Notre Dame.
Defending medalist Carly Truitt, from Marysville, is looking to become the second two-time medalist at the state tournament. Truitt is tied for the lead at two-over 74 with Hudson's Hillery Wilson.
Worthington Kilbourne's Jessica Belskis won back-to-back titles in 1994 and 1995.
The boys tournament was played at Ohio State's Scarlet course while the girls played at OSU's Gray course.
