COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- The Ohio High School Athletic Association announced Friday that members had approved a change to a bylaw covering travel rules for schools.
The current rule says schools can compete in out-of-state contests at any time as long as the travel distance does not exceed 300 miles one-way. Schools can go beyond that limit at any time if no school time is missed.
The new rule says that beginning Aug. 1, Ohio teams will be able to compete in Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Pennsylvania, West Virginia or Ontario regardless of the distance they travel.
Traveling outside those areas will be limited to one trip per sport per season provided there is no loss of school time.
Membership approved the changes 465 to 180 in voting conducted between Oct. 1 and Wednesday, the OHSAA said.
Members declined an option that would have prohibited all travel outside the states and provinces surrounding Ohio.
