GREENVILLE, PA. Borough transfers dispatching duties

The former dispatchers now work for COG and dispatch for Thiel College security.
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Effective at 3 p.m. today, Greenville and West Salem Township residents who need police must dial 911 for help.
The borough has shut down its police dispatching operation as part of its effort to recover from financially distressed municipality status, and all dispatching will now be handled through Mercer County's 911 Center.
The borough's six part-time dispatchers have been hired by the Mercer County Regional Council of Governments to serve as jail attendants at the Greenville station.
COG took over operation of the jail May 15.
Those individuals will still be doing some dispatching, but it will only be for Thiel College security, said Police Chief Thomas Strahler.
Thiel is contributing $25,000 a year for that dispatch service, and the jail attendants will double as the college's dispatchers, he said.
Switching borough police dispatching services to the 911 Center is expected to save about $10,000 a year, Strahler said.
Contacting officers
There will still be someone at the station 24 hours a day, and people with a complaint can stop at the station and speak to an attendant who will contact an on-duty officer to meet with them, he said.
People can also call the 911 dispatch center to arrange for an officer to contact them.
The nonemergency number for the center is (724) 662-6110.
People who call the borough station after 3 p.m. daily and on weekends will hear a recording directing them to call the 911 Center.
