YOUNGSTOWN -- Micah Howard, a member of YSU Dana School of Music's faculty and Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, will be guest artist at YSU New Music Society's annual fall concert at 8 p.m. Wednesday in the lower gallery of McDonough Museum of Art, Wick Avenue. Howard, who plays string bass, will be featured in the Ohio premiere of "Lyric Caprices," a composition by Dr. Robert Rollin of the Dana faculty.
Several student compositions also will be performed for the first time, including freshman Fabio DeLuca's "Nocturne for Piano." DeLuca earned a $1,500 prize in the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers National Composition Competition with this piece.
Other New Music Society concerts will be at noon Wednesday in Butler Institute of American Art, 524 Wick Ave., and at 11 a.m. Friday in Bliss Recital Hall. Admission is free.
Polish orchestra in Pa.
MEADVILLE, Pa. -- Polish Philharmonic Resovia will play symphonic and operatic works at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Allegheny College's Shafer Auditorium. In its 40-year history, the philharmonic orchestra has performed in concert halls across Europe and recorded seven albums. Conductor T. Wojciechowski is a regular guest conductor at Royal Danish Opera in Copenhagen and Staatsoper in Munich. The program will include works by Grieg, Schubert, Kurpinski and Mendelssohn. Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for senior citizens and students ages 17 and under and $5 for Allegheny College students. Call (814) 332-3101 for details.
Jazz band to play
YOUNGSTOWN -- Russell Thompson and the Free Agent Band will perform Saturday night at Aristocrat Banquet Hall, 571 Francisca Ave. Thompson, a jazz saxophonist and recording artist, has performed with a number of artists, including LeVert. The 8:30 p.m. show also will feature Cliff Barnes and Company; Dwight Thompson, formerly of The Rude Boys; and Deborah Hunter, formerly of Soul Pocket. Guest soloist
YOUNGSTOWN -- Accomplished euphonium player Adam Frey will be guest soloist when YSU Dana Symphonic Wind Ensemble performs at 8 p.m. Oct. 27 in Edward W. Powers Auditorium, 260 W. Federal St. Admission is free. Frey, of Atlanta, earned bachelor and masters degrees in music as well as a professional performance diploma with distinction from Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, England. Frey has performed with many diverse orchestras, from Boston Pops to Vaasa in Finland, and has recorded two CDs. The more recent recording, "Collected Dreams," features Scottish, Irish and classical music as performed on euphonium with synthesizer as accompaniment.
Air time for 'Toady'
Good news for the cast of "The Harvey Toady Show," a locally-produced sketch comedy show that airs at 10:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays on Time Warner Channel 15. "Comedy Night School," a weekly sketch program on an Orlando, Fla., station, will include some Harvey Toady material in one of its future episodes. Spokesman Doug Gordon of Gordon-Tynes Productions says an air date has not yet been determined. Mike Keriotis of Cortland is a Harvey Toady company founder.
