WAMPUM, Pa. -- A New Galilee man was taken to the hospital after accidentally shooting himself, said Pennsylvania State Police. Police said Donald Jay Householder, 42, of RD 1, Box 300a was leaving his car on Beaver Street at 9:32 p.m. Wednesday when he put his gun in the front of his pants. The gun went off and he was injured in his pelvic region, police said. He is being treated at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh. His condition was not available this morning.
Public library book sale
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- The New Castle Public Library's book sale will continue through Monday in the Book Cellar, on the lower level of the library. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. today and noon to 8 p.m. Monday. Books are $2 a bag. All proceeds benefit the library.
Convenience store robbed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A masked man robbed the Red Apple Convenience Store on Wilmington Road. Police said the man, wearing a light-blue sweat shirt, pants and a ball cap and with a green handkerchief over his face, came into the store at 11:50 p.m. Thursday. The clerk said the man demanded cash and motioned to his waist but he did not show a gun. An undisclosed amount of money was taken from the register, police said.
Schedule for closings
CLARK, Pa. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close its Clark, Mahaney and Shenango Day Use Areas at Shenango River Lake for the season at sunset Sunday. They will reopen in April. The boat launch at Shenango Recreation Area will remain open until the lake freezes, and the Hartford Road, Parkers Landing and Golden Run boat launches will remain open until the lake level prohibits launching.
Housing development plan
COLUMBIANA -- Clipper Circle will be the name of a housing development planned on Columbiana-Waterford Road on the city's east side. Bob Belding, city zoning officer, said K & amp;J Development of Salem will build single-family homes on 15 acres east of the Columbiana high school-middle school complex. The development is named for the school district's mascot, a Clipper airplane. Belding said two-story and ranch-style homes in the $120,000 to $200,000 range are planned on 38 lots. The city planning commission approved a preliminary site plan for the development this week.
Town hall meeting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth, along with several area agencies, is sponsoring a town hall meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Choffin Career and Technical Center to address alcohol marketing and its affect on youths' decisions regarding alcohol use.
Other sponsors are ON TASC, Help Hotline Crisis Center, Ohio State University-Youngstown Young Scholars Program, Prevention Partners Plus and the Youngstown City Schools Safe and Drug-Free Schools Program.
The event includes a presentation by area high school students and a panel discussion with representatives from the center, Ohio Parents for Drug Free Youth, the Mahoning County District Board of Health, Prevention Partners Plus and the Boardman Police Department.
Home break-in
SHARON, Pa. -- Police arrested Andrew C. Hoffman, 20, of Madison Street on charges of burglary and theft in a break-in at a home in the 300 block of Grant Street. Police said Hoffman is accused of entering the home of an acquaintance through a first-floor window Sept. 2 and removing a small safe containing $1,800 cash from a second-floor room. He was arrested on a warrant at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the office of District Justice James McMahon and freed after posting $10,000 bond.
Easter Seals award
YOUNGSTOWN -- Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties Inc. has been awarded $6,000 through the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, a private philanthropic trust. The money will be used toward purchase of an enhanced telecommunication system that will replace the 13-year-old telephone system at the main Easter Seals center at 299 Edwards Street.
