VOLLEYBALL Poland, Hubbard advance



Howland defeated Bedford while top-seeded Springfield was eliminated.
BOARDMAN -- Hubbard and Poland, seeded second and third respectively, easily defeated two City Series schools Wednesday in the Division II sectional volleyball tournament at Boardman High.
Hubbard 15-15, Chaney 0-2
Traci Hassell had 10 points with seven aces and seven assists while Tiffany Ditman had eight points for the Eagles (20-2). Adrienne Peace served two points for Chaney (11-13).
Poland 15-15, Wilson 1-1
Dee Muransky served 11 points along with three aces and Ashley Conger had seven points, two aces and eight assists for the Bulldogs (21-3). For the Redmen (0-22), Barisha Rivers and Kadijah Wilson each had a point.
Div. I
SOLON -- Jaime Kelly had three points, two aces, 12 kills, two blocks and two digs for Howland, which won a sectional final over Bedford, 15-13, 15-13. Brittany Kelly had two points, two aces, two kills, 16 assists and one block to aid the Tigers (15-8), while Julie Griffin had 15 points, two aces, three kills and two digs.
In next Wednesday's district semifinal, Howland will play either Brecksville or Garfield Heights.
Wadsworth 15-9-15,Canfield 6-15-9
STOW -- Kelly Reese collected 17 assists, six points, three aces and three digs for Canfield as the Cardinals were eliminated by Wadsworth on Tuesday, 15-6, 9-15, 15-7.
Kerrie Haurin also had four kills, 11 points, three aces, four blocks and 17 digs for the Cardinals.
Div. III
SALEM -- East Palestine upset top-seeded Springfield 6-15, 15-13, 15-13, and Crestview eliminated Tri-County League rival United 15-6, 15-7.
Tricia Richards had nine points and three aces for Crestview (16-6) defeated while Michelle Parks had six digs and Jen Harroff had five.
Lindsay Sapp made 16 assists, Stacy McCall had five kills and Katie Kibby made seven blocks.
Div. IV
LISBON -- Third-seeded Maplewood and Western Reserve won their opening matches and will meet Saturday at 3 p.m. at Lisbon High.
Maplewood 15-15, Leetonia 10-4
For the Rockets (15-8), Melissa Shipman had 14 points with four aces while Jennifer Grayson added 10 kills and eight blocks. Bethany Grunick led the Bears (7-16) with five points, 11 assists and 43 sets while Malorie Valentine added six kills.
Western Reserve 15-15,Southern 2-5
Katie Harmon led the Blue Devils (11-12) with nine points, 24 assists and three aces. Andrea Martin came up with nine points.
For the Indians (0-20), Ashley Bach had three points and 18 sets while Britnie Lutz had 15 sets.
