Eagle award
Jeremy James Minamyer, son of Michael and Becky Minamyer of New Springfield, has earned his Eagle Scout award, Boy Scouting's highest honor.
After earning his Arrow of Light Award in 1996, Jeremy joined Boy Scout Troop 119, which is sponsored by the New Springfield Church of God.
His Eagle Scout service project consisted of planning and cleaning trails for a walking nature trail and animal refuge in the four-acre pine grove behind the church.
He has been Troop 119's senior patrol leader, patrol leader, quartermaster and scribe. He was also the scribe for Troop 1319 during the 2001 National Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill, Va. He is a member of the Order of the Arrow. He attended the Charles L. Summers High Adventure Base in Minnesota in 2000 and has earned 27 merit badges.
Jeremy is a member of the church and is active in its Youth Group. He is a senior at Springfield Local High School.

Doctorate in history
Daniel Weimer received his doctorate in American history from Kent State University.
He graduated from Ursuline High School in 1989 and attended John Carroll University, where he received a bachelor's degree in history in 1993. In 1996, he earned his master's degree in American history from KSU.
Weimer is an instructor in history and international studies at Northwest Vista College in San Antonio, Texas, where he lives with his wife, the former Georgina Tambasis. He is the son of William and Lillian Weimer of Youngstown.

Distinguished nurse
The Cleveland General and St. Luke's Nurses' Alumni Association recently honored Barbara Jones, a native of Girard, with the distinguished alumni award for her many lifetime achievements.
Jones, a 1949 graduate of Girard High School, received her bachelor's degree in nursing from Wheaton College and her master's degree in nursing education from the University of Pittsburgh. She received her nursing diploma from St. Luke's School of Nursing in 1952.
A pediatric specialist and nursing administrator, she retired in 1995 as vice president of nursing at Swedish Covenant Hospital, Chicago. She was active in many nursing organizations and coordinated a 30-hour continuing education course for missionary and Peace Corps nurses in Zaire, Africa.
50 years as lawyer
Bruce Birrell, a Girard resident and an attorney in private practice in Warren, recently was honored by the Ohio State Bar Association for serving 50 years as a lawyer. His father, George Henry Birrell, served as a Trumbull County Common Pleas Court judge for many years.
