YOUNGSTOWN -- Easter Seals of Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana Counties Inc. has been awarded $6,000 through the Community Foundation of the Mahoning Valley, a private philanthropic trust.
The money will be used toward purchase of an enhanced telecommunication system that will replace the 13-year-old telephone system at the main Easter Seals center at 299 Edwards Street.
Haunted trail, hayride
LOWELLVILLE -- Lowellville Haunted Bike Trail and hayride, sponsored by the Lowellville Firefighters Association and the Lowellville Firefighters Ladies Auxiliary, will run from 7 to 11 p.m. Saturday and Sunday and Oct. 24 to 26. Admission is $3 per person; children under 6 are admitted free.
New meeting place
YOUNGSTOWN -- There has been a change in the meeting place for the upcoming Parkside Neighbors Block Watch session. The meeting will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the home of the Taiclets, 1849 Coronado Ave. Block watch newsletters were mailed with another address for the meeting.
High School vandalism
YOUNGSTOWN -- Someone wrote pro-Cardinal Mooney High School slogans with red, white and gold spray paint on trees, rocks, sidewalks, parking lots and poles at Ursuline High School, police said. The vandalism, which included slogans on walls on a building across from the Wick Avenue school, was discovered Thursday. School officials said they would videotape the damage.
Girl assaulted with lock
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 15-year-old Chaney High School student used a combination lock to beat another girl at the school Thursday, police said. The Glenwood Avenue teenager was handcuffed and taken to the juvenile justice center to face a charge of felonious assault. The victim, also 15, told police she was sitting in a chair in the main office when she was struck in the head, back and arm with the lock. She was taken for medical treatment by her guardian.
Lisbon woman robbed
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Lisbon woman who sought directions to her aunt's house on North Garland Avenue told police she was robbed at 10:30 p.m. Thursday by a man who offered to show her the way. The 30-year-old Glasgow Road woman said $60 was taken from her coat pocket in the 1000 block of North Garland.
YMCA fight, arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- A fight at the YMCA on North Champion Street between two men Thursday evening ended with the arrest of Jonathan F. McCawley, 41, on a charge of disorderly conduct. McCawley's address is listed as Sarasota, Fla., but his employment is listed as a restaurant on Mahoning Avenue. Michael Faith, an off-duty Struthers police officer, said he asked McCawley to leave the YMCA after staff there had asked McCawley several times to leave, reports show, but they don't indicate why he was asked to leave. When city police arrived about 7:30 p.m., McCawley and Faith were wrestling on the ground.
Schedule for closings
CLARK, Pa. - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close its Clark, Mahaney and Shenango Day Use Areas at Shenango River Lake for the season at sunset Sunday. They will reopen in April.
The boat launch at Shenango Recreation Area will remain open until the lake freezes, and the Hartford Road, Parkers Landing and Golden Run boat launches will remain open until the lake level prohibits launching.
Truck robbed at rest stop
AUSTINTOWN -- Thirteen cases of new Maxwell shoes were stolen from a tractor-trailer parked at the 76 truck stop, 5400 76 Drive, police said.
A 36-year-old truck driver from Texas told police he parked the rig about 3 a.m. Thursday and went to sleep in the cab. When he awoke about 7:30 a.m., he discovered the padlock and seal on the truck had been cut, and the items were missing, reports show. No dollar value of the merchandise was noted. Reports don't indicate how many shoes were in the cases.
