Dodge Dakota pickups recalled over wiring

WASHINGTON (AP) -- DaimlerChrysler AG is recalling 50,082 Dodge Dakota pickups because of a wiring problem, the government said Thursday.
The recall affects pickups with manual transmissions from model years 2001-2003. The clutch pedal in some of the Dakotas could wear away at headlight and dashboard wiring, preventing the use of the horn, headlights or turn signals.
Owners are to be notified of the recall next month. Dealers will reroute the wiring in the affected pickups.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration also said Thursday that DaimlerChrysler will recall 1,739 Dodge Viper sports cars because a switch could corrode, making the headlights fail.
