CANFIELD -- Someone smashed the front door window of Chudda Bing's, 3620 Starr Centre Drive, and removed $150 from the register, according to the Mahoning County Sheriff's Department. Another $150 was taken from the cash register at Nicole's Pizza, an adjoining business, reports show. The owner of Taste Bud's Bakery and Deli, same address, reported the break-ins Tuesday. A refrigerated trailer behind Taste Bud's also was broken into and a large amount of meat taken, reports show.
Woman calls for help
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 40-year-old Oak Lane woman whose eyes, hands and mouth were covered with duct tape managed to call 911 on a cell phone from her back yard on the city's North Side just before 10 p.m. Tuesday and mumble for help.
Police found the woman on the ground and removed the tape. She told the officers she had returned home from shopping and was unloading her car in the driveway and throwing trash into nearby cans when a man came up behind her and demanded money as he duct-taped her eyes.
The man then pulled her behind her house, put the tape on her mouth and demanded her car keys. She threw the keys but they landed in shrubbery. The suspect took a store bag from her car that contained a shirt and pair of pants and ran. She told police the duct tape had come from the driver's side of her car, which was unlocked.
Search turns up boy's gun
YOUNGSTOWN -- Seeing that a weapons search was under way, a 13-year-old boy at Hayes Junior High School on Ford Avenue tried to leave the building Tuesday, police said. When stopped by a police officer, the boy reached into the pouch of his sweat shirt and turned over a semi-automatic-style BB gun, reports show. The Bradley Lane boy was then taken to the principal's office and suspended for 10 days. After that, he was taken to the juvenile justice center to face a charge of conveyance of a dangerous ordnance on school property.
Domestic dispute
YOUNGSTOWN -- Shots were fired during a domestic dispute at the Coconut Grove on South Avenue at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday, police said. A 23-year-old woman said her boyfriend got upset, thinking she was looking at another man in the bar. The boyfriend then told a man in the bar to back up and, once they were outside, the boyfriend aimed and fired five shots, reports show. No one was hit. The victim told police he was pulled back inside the bar and the gunman fled. As of this morning, no arrest had been made.
Town hall meeting set
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Ohio Center on Alcohol Marketing and Youth, along with several area agencies, is sponsoring a town hall meeting from 6 to 8 p.m. Oct. 22 at the Choffin Career and Technical Center to address alcohol marketing and its affect on youth's decisions regarding alcohol use.
Other sponsors are ON TASC, Help Hotline Crisis Center, Ohio State University-Youngstown Young Scholars Program, Prevention Partners Plus and the Youngstown City Schools Safe and Drug Free Schools Program.
Training exercise
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mahoning County Health Board had a training exercise Tuesday to coordinate local response in the event of a bioterrorist attack. The goal was to become familiar with bioterrorist threats and to develop relationships among the agencies and organizations that would respond to them. Representatives of local hospitals, public health and public safety agencies participated in the exercise at Oakhill Renaissance Place on the city's South Side.
Board approves budget
LIBERTY -- The board of education approved a $16.8 million budget for fiscal year 2004 on Tuesday.
The board accepted the resignations of intervention assistant Jennifer Blasko, and Amy Perline as elementary prep bowl adviser.
The board granted these supplemental contracts for the 2003-04 school year: Laura Cullumbine, assistant speech coach, $1,157; Ryan William, assistant wrestling coach seventh and eighth grades, $3,135; Betsy Weinblatt, girls and boys tennis coach at $1,995 each; Danielle DePasquale, head softball coach, $2,566; and Raymond Wells, head baseball coach, $3,136.
