Theft suspect arrested
YOUNGSTOWN -- Danny R. Toy of Hubbard, riding a 10-speed bike and balancing a kerosene heater on his shoulder, was arrested at 6:15 p.m. Monday on McGuffey Road and charged with breaking and entering.
Police said Toy, 33, of Ruth Drive broke into a house in the 2600 block of McGuffey and took the heater. The officers found small cuts on Toy's hands and a broken window at the house. Toy told the officers he took the heater because the homeowner, a friend, is in prison. The officers said Toy also matches the description of a man on a bike suspected of breaking into a house on Jacobs Road last week.
Man is shot in the back
YOUNGSTOWN -- City police are looking for a 31-year-old Martin Luther King Boulevard man believed to have shot a 34-year-old Clyde Street man in the back Monday evening. According to police reports, Frederick Johnson was shot behind building 520 in the Westlake Housing Projects just before 6 p.m. Reports say he ran around the building and collapsed in front, where he was found by police. Johnson was in critical condition today at St. Elizabeth Health Center. Johnson's family, police reports said, told officers the men had been arguing over a woman before the shooting.
Candidates forum
YOUNGSTOWN -- The 7th Ward Citizens Coalition is inviting candidates for Youngstown council president, 7th Ward council member, and Youngstown Board of Education to speak at a forum at 7 p.m. Thursday at the OCCHA building, 3660 Shirley Road.
Chase ends in arrest
YOUNGSTOWN -- A van on Oak Hill Avenue that failed to stop for the red light at Delason Avenue at 3 a.m. today was pursued by police to a driveway on St. Louis Avenue, where the driver jumped out and ran, reports show. Maurice Conyer, 20, of East Avondale Avenue was caught in the 2200 block of Market Street. He faces charges of aggravated trafficking in marijuana, resisting arrest, driving under suspension and failure to obey a traffic control device. Police said they confiscated six bags of suspected marijuana from Conyer's sweatshirt pocket and six .22-caliber rounds from his pants pocket.
The officers saw him making a throwing motion with his left hand during the foot chase but didn't locate anything.
Water disruption set
LEETONIA -- Water will be shut off at 9 a.m. Wednesday to village water customers on Columbia Street east of Mill Street and on Cherry Fork Avenue, Wilson Street, Empire Street and East High Street. Street crews are replacing a fire hydrant at Cherry and Columbia streets. Village Administrator Gary Phillips said the water will be off until the hydrant is replaced. When water service is restored, customers affected by the shutoff will experience low water pressure and volume until the system stabilizes, he said. Customers on the south side of the village will experience discolored water for a few days. All customers whose water is shut off will be under an order to boil drinking water until further notice, he said.
ATV theft in Hermitage
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said someone pried a doorknob from a garage door in the 800 block of South Hermitage Road to steal an all-terrain vehicle parked inside. The red 2001 Polaris Scrambler 500 was taken between 11 a.m. Sunday and 10 a.m. Monday.
City Slag site vandalized
HERMITAGE, Pa. -- Police said vandals caused extensive damage at City Slag at 300 Ohio St. by dumping diesel fuel and used motor oil and smashing windows. About 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from a tank after the vandals opened a valve sometime over the weekend. An additional five to 10 gallons in a barrel was dumped onto the ground, as were about 20 gallons of used oil in a separate container. The vandals broke eight windows in an excavator and a window in the generator room and dented a trailer with rocks. They also tore two emergency shut-off switches from a post, police said.
