NEW SPRINGFIELD -- Springfield Township offices will be closed Thursday for the funeral of Shirley Casity, 64, longtime township clerk and secretary who died Sunday.
Casity became ill at an all-class reunion at Springfield Local High School Sunday evening. The nature of her illness was not immediately available.
Fire Chief Brian Hughes said the township rescue squad responded within four minutes to a 911 call about 5 p.m., and the ambulance took her to St. Elizabeth Health Center's Boardman campus.
Casity was a 1957 graduate of Springfield Local High School.
Shirley Heck, chairman of the Springfield Township trustees, called her death "an untimely and unfortunate loss to the township."
"She has given many years of dedicated service to the township in her positions as both clerk and secretary. She was a mentor and adviser to the trustees and many members of the community with whom she had contact."
To hire interim clerk
Heck added that an interim clerk will be hired as soon as possible. Casity was up for re-election on the November ballot. Whoever is elected to the post would not take the seat until April.
Calling hours are from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Terry A. Cunningham Funeral Home, Bessemer, Pa., and from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Berlin Center United Methodist Church.
