Koval wins by TKO
WHEELING, W.Va. -- Chris Koval came back from a first-round knockdown and a closed right eye from a head butt, to stop Cleveland's Toby Vaughn with 51 seconds remaining in the third round of a scheduled four-round heavyweight fight Saturday at Wheeling Downs.
Koval (12-1, 11 KOs), weighing 221 pounds to Vaughn's 215, had a near disastrous first round and a massive clashing of heads with Vaughn (2-3) in round two to dominate the rest of the fight.
Koval, of Austintown, put Vaughn down with a solid right to the body in the second round and put him down again with the same shot early in the third round, finishing him with a combination right to the body and left hook to the jaw. The referee stopped the contest after that.
Whitaker stopped
AUBURN HILLS. Mich. -- Warren light heavyweight Etianne "E.T." Whitaker never seemed to recover from a right to the top of the head in the first round of Saturday night's scheduled 12-round title bout at the Palace in Auburn Hills, and was stopped at the 1:22 mark of the second round by Detroit's Rico Hoye.
Hoye successfully defended his International Boxing Association title and captured the North American Boxing Organization's 175-pound crown
Whitaker (29-11-2), the 31-year-old veteran, opened the fight by attacking Hoye's body and was working inside when he was caught with an overhand right that came straight down on the top of his head. Whitaker, dazed by the shot, went down to one knee, but bounced right back up to take an eight count. He later admitted that he might have popped up too soon.
In the second round, Hoye tagged Whitaker with long range shots. Whitaker went down early in round two and after taking an eight count he was decked again by a short right. Seconds later a long range left-right combination sent Whitaker down again.
