Woman injured by car
GROVE CITY, Pa. -- Pennsylvania State Police said an Ohio woman was injured when she was run over by a car on Diamond Road in Pine Township. Police said Sybil Dunlop, 22, of Coshocton, was trying to reach into a moving car as it was leaving a party around 12:30 a.m. Sunday. She lost her footing and was run over by the left rear wheel, police said. No charges were filed against the driver, Mark Walters, 22, of Mercer. Dunlop was taken to United Community Hospital and then transferred to UPMC Presbyterian in Pittsburgh, where she was in fair condition this morning.
Suspicious powder
SALEM -- A red powder found inside a government-subsidized housing complex for seniors will be analyzed to determine what it is, police said.
The powder was noticed Saturday morning at the Smith Center, 500 E. Fourth St., by fire department personnel who had gone to the building on an unrelated medical call, police said. It was distributed outside about five apartment doors inside the complex. The Mahoning County hazardous materials team was called in to gather the powder. The substance is being kept by police while they seek to have it analyzed.
Fire in apartment
SALEM -- A kitchen fire in an apartment complex at 2553 Lexington Ave. caused about $15,000 loss, fire officials said. The fire broke out about 7:06 p.m. Saturday in the apartment of Mildred Pittman after a pan of oil on the stove overheated. No injuries were reported.
Man sought in death
VERNON -- A 46-year-old Vernon man is being sought for questions in the death of a Greenville man. The Ohio State Highway Patrol wants to talk to Bruce Coxson about the death of Charles Palm, 29. The patrol said Coxson, who is 6 feet 4 inches tall and weighs 230 pounds, is known to frequent the Vernon and Greenville areas. A hunter discovered Palm's body around 6:30 p.m. Friday near a gravel parking area in the Shenango Wild Life area here.
The patrol said Palm's death is a homicide but declined to state a cause. The Trumbull County Coroner's Office is closed today due to the Columbus Day holiday.
Search for armed robber
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Police are searching for a man who robbed a Family Dollar Store on Wilmington Road and handcuffed the clerk. Neshannock Township police said the man came in through a rear storage area and pointed a pistol at the 17-year-old clerk around 7:30 p.m. Saturday. He made the clerk remove all the money from the safe before putting her on the floor and handcuffing her with plastic "flex cuffs." Neshannock Police describe the robber as 6 feet tall with a medium, muscular build. He was wearing a long-sleeved, white, tight-fitting shirt and a fisherman-style hat and had a dark, sheer material over his face.
Charged in store robbery
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- City police have accused a Wallace Avenue man of robbing the Tic Toc Food Mart on Highland Avenue at gunpoint. Police have charged Eric Barbati, 18, with armed robbery, carrying a firearm without a license, terroristic threats, simple assault, receiving stolen property, aggravated assault, theft by unlawful taking and receiving stolen property. Police said a man with a pistol entered the food mart at 9 a.m. Saturday and demanded money. Police said the man started stuffing money from the cash register into his pants and put money that had fallen on the floor into the clerk's purse and ran off. Barbati was later spotted by Neshannock police and identified by the clerk, city police said.
Lecture on influenza
ALLIANCE -- Catherine Bender Smith, a microbiologist with the National Center for Infectious Diseases, will present a lecture on "Influenza: A Once and Future Threat" at 10:35 a.m. Thursday at Mount Union College's Presser Recital Hall. Bender Smith, a graduate of Mount Union, has been with the center for more than 10 years.
