RMI Titanium negotiations resume
THE VINDICATOR, YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO
WEATHERSFIELD -- RMI Titanium managers and the union representing the company's approximately 400 hourly employees were facing a contract deadline of 11:59 p.m. today as they returned to the bargaining table this morning.
Todd Weddell, president of United Steelworkers of America Local 2155, said the company has proposed concessions worth $3.5 million to $4 million and the two sides were still far apart after meeting all day Monday.
Union members voted to authorize a strike several weeks ago, Weddell said, but he emphasized that the union wants a settlement.
"The committee is not looking to go on strike at all. We're looking to reach an agreement," he said. "We as a union have done nothing to signal that we're looking for a strike."
Company officials declined to comment.
Union leaders said the company wants to reduce workers' hourly rate, which now averages $16 per hour, eliminate some overtime pay and increase workers' out-of-pocket costs for health care.
Weddell said the union wants salary increases, pension increases and some improvement in health care.
The union's current 41/2-year contract was reached after a bitter 61/2-month strike five years ago.
RMI and its parent company, RTI International Metals, are both based in Weathersfield Township and employ about 595 hourly and salaried workers.
