OHIO STATE NOTEBOOK From Madison, Wis.
Streaks snapped: In addition to having their 19-game winning streak snapped, the Buckeyes saw several other streaks end. Ohio State had won six straight road games, last losing on Oct. 27, 2001 at Penn State (29-27). Those six games did not include the 20-16 win over Cincinnati on Sept. 21, 2002, because that game was played at a neutral site (Paul Brown Stadium).
Big Ten: The Badgers took over first place in the Big Ten with a 3-0 record. Ohio State's loss was its first conference defeat in 11 games.
Series: The Buckeyes have a 50-16-5 record against Wisconsin. Ohio State hadn't lost at Camp Randall Stadium since a 20-16 defeat in 1992 (four wins and a tie in 1993). Ohio State is 31-10-3 against the Badgers when ranked in the Top 25. In the 12 times when both were ranked, Ohio State is 7-3-2.
Cliffhangers: Before Saturday, Ohio State had won 10 consecutive games when the outcome was seven points or less. Four of those games came this season. Ohio State won 19-14 last year in Madison while Wisconsin won 20-17 at Ohio Stadium in 2001.
Bad omen: Wisconsin's 7-3 lead at halftime was the first time the Buckeyes have trailed after two quarters. The Buckeyes' three-point output was the lowest since last year's game at Purdue (a 10-6 victory).
Touchdowns: Quarterback Craig Krenzel's fourth-quarter touchdown pass to wide receiver Michael Jenkins extended Ohio State's streak to 83 games of scoring a touchdown. The last time Ohio State didn't score a touchdown was in a 13-9 loss to Michigan in 1996. Jenkins has now caught at least one pass in 32 consecutive games.
100-yard rushers: Badgers backup tailback Booker Stanley rushed for 125 yards on 31 carries. The last time the Buckeyes gave up 100 yards to one back was in last year's game against Wisconsin when Anthony Davis ran for 144 yards on 25 carries. In the last 23 games, Stanley and Davis are the only backs to earn 100 yards against the Buckeyes defense.
Red zone: The Buckeyes converted both times they reached the Wisconsin 20 (Mike Nugent's 24-yard field and Jenkins' 6-yard touchdown reception).
Career-best: Senior linebacker Robert Reynolds posted a career-best 12 tackles. His previous best was 11 against Washington in the season opener. Reynolds knocked Badgers quarterback Jim Sorgi out of the game in the third quarter with a neck grab. "He has a neck injury," Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez said. "He's having a hard time breathing." Asked if he noticed how it happened, Alvarez's response was terse: "You saw the film."
Apologies: Reynolds apologized Sunday night for jabbing Sorgi in the throat. Sorgi couldn't talk and had difficulty swallowing and breathing. Reynolds issued a statement through Ohio State, saying that he had apologized to Sorgi and Wisconsin coach Barry Alvarez. "I lost my poise and there is no excuse for that. That is certainly not characteristic of Ohio State football. I take full responsibility for my action. As a senior, I have to responsibility to set a better example." Tressel said he also had apologized to Alvarez. "Having known Rob for three years, I believe this is an isolated incident and out of character for him," Tressel said. "He has apologized to me and is willing to accept the consequences of his behavior."
Attendance: Saturday's crowd of 79,793 was the fifth-largest crowd at Camp Randall Stadium, which is being renovated to add luxury boxes. The Badgers 6-1 start is their best since the 1998 team opened 7-0.
