FORT WORTH, Texas -- Kenny Brack was seriously injured in the Chevy 500 on Sunday when his car was hit from behind and pinwheeled down the track before breaking apart, marring Gil de Ferran's victory and Scott Dixon's IRL championship.
Brack suffered multiple fractures at the season-ending race at Texas Motor Speedway. The car broke apart when it slammed into the 12-foot steel catchfence at the top of the 39-inch concrete wall on the backstretch.
Track spokesperson Sarona Winfrey said Brack broke his lower back, sternum, right thigh bone and both ankles. Winfrey said surgery was scheduled on his thigh and both ankles for later Sunday night, and Brack was still listed in serious but stable condition.
De Ferran, driving in his final race, was working hard to hold off the tenacious Dixon when the crash came with 12 laps remaining as Brack was hit by Tomas Scheckter, who was not injured.
Brack was airlifted to Parkland Memorial Hospital after being removed from what was left of his car. A team spokesman said Brack was alert and joking with his wife and the manager of Team Rahal while being treated in the infield care center at the track.
Dixon gave Chip Ganassi his first IRL championship after four titles in the rival CART series.
CART
MEXICO CITY -- Paul Tracy dominated the Mexico Grand Prix from start to finish, building his lead for the CART series championship with just two races to go.
Rookie Sebastian Bourdais, who clinched rookie of the year honors, pressured Tracy through the final 32 laps after beating Bruno Junqueira out of their second pit stop on lap 38.
Tracy's Team Forsythe crew held his lead on a final pit stop: He entered just a half-second ahead of Bourdais and came out just ahead. With points for the victory and most laps led, Tracy has 226 points to 197 for Junqueira.
Mexico's Mario Dominguez finished third, and fellow countryman Michel Jourdain Jr. fought back from a first-lap mishap and finished fourth.
Formula One
SUZUKA, Japan -- Michael Schumacher won a record sixth world title Sunday, and this one had an odd feel. He clinched the championship by finishing eighth in the Japanese Grand Prix.
The German held off Kimi Raikkonen for the title, getting a big lift from Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello. The Brazilian won the season-ending race ahead of Raikkonen, Schumacher's closest rival.
This was not an easy race for Schumacher. He had to overcome two bumpings, a brief drop to 20th and a minor collision with brother Ralf before seeing Barrichello win a race Schumacher has won five times.
Schumacher scored a point for eighth place, leaving the German with 93 points for the season and Raikkonen with 91. It was Schumacher's fourth consecutive title with Ferrari, and was Ferrari's fifth constructors championship.
