Westminster College will dedicate recreation center
NEW WILMINGTON, Pa. -- The new recreation center at Westminster College will be dedicated to longtime educator and coach Marjorie A. Walker at 6 p.m. Friday in the Old 77 gym.
The Marge Walker Recreation Center includes cardiovascular aerobic equipment such as stationary bicycles, elliptical machines, treadmills and stair climbers. Patrons can watch television or videotapes, or listen to the stereo, in this spalike environment. It also features a dance studio and complements the state-of-the-art weight and fitness training facility at the Memorial Field House.
Walker, professor emerita of physical education, worked at Westminster from 1962 to 1993. She served not only as professor of education, but also as chairwoman of the department, associate director of athletics, basketball coach, tennis coach and head volleyball coach with an overall record of 341-277. While at Westminster, Walker also served as adviser for the Student Government Association, Panhellenic Council, cheerleaders, majorettes and drill team.
She was two-time District Coach of the Year, a member of Delta Kappa Gamma Honor Society, past president of the Women's Keystone Conference and chairwoman of the district volleyball and softball coaches association of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. She received the Virginia Napoli Award for Outstanding Professional Service.
The dedication is open to the public. An open house will follow at 6:15 p.m., and tours will be conducted from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
