WEATHERSFIELD RMI's union goes back to negotiations

WEATHERSFIELD -- Union leaders representing about 400 hourly workers at RMI Titanium returned to the bargaining table this morning, hoping to reach a settlement before their contract deadline, at 11:59 p.m. Tuesday.
Todd Weddell, president of United Steelworkers of America Local 2155, said the union gave company officials a proposal Saturday and expected a response today. Talks were also scheduled Tuesday.
"There's always hope," he said, adding that the two sides remained far apart after talks that lasted most of the day Saturday.
Disappointing offer
Union leaders were disappointed with the company's last contract proposal, which Weddell called "totally concessionary."
The offer would have reduced workers' hourly rate, which now averages $16 per hour; would have eliminated some overtime pay; and would have increased workers' out-of-pocket costs for health care.
He said the union is ready to work with the company to meet the need for more flexibility in production, but leaders hope to see salary increases, pension increases and some improvement in health care.
The union's current 41/2-year contract was reached after a bitter 61/2-month strike five years ago.
RMI and its parent company, RTI International Metals, are both based in Weathersfield Township and employ about 595 hourly and salaried workers.
