ROCKY RIVER -- Canfield sophomore Renee Lesnett placed third at Saturday's Division I district tennis tournament at Tri-City Park to earn her second straight trip to the state singles tournament.
Lesnett, who had already qualified for the state meet by winning her first two matches on Thursday, lost her first match on Saturday to GlenOak's Jacqueline Lee, 6-2, 6-1, then defeated Massillon Jackson's Kristen Robison in the consolation match, 6-2, 6-3.
"It's been a lot of fun," Canfield coach Pat Pavlansky said. "They're playing their best tennis right now and hopefully they'll play a little better."
Canfield sophomore Rachel McGowan earned her first state tournament berth by winning her first match in the losers' bracket, defeating Mayfield's Mariya Poretskly, 7-5, 6-0. McGowan lost to Mentor's Ashley Frey, 6-7, 6-2, 6-2, in the fifth place match.
It's the first time in Canfield history that two singles players have qualified for the state tournament.
"That's a pretty amazing feat," Pavlansky said.
Div. II
MASSILLON -- CVCA's Natalie Aleman defeated Struthers senior Emily Berry, 6-1, 6-0, in the fifth-place match at Saturday's Div. II district tournament at Jackson Park Courts.
Berry came up just short of qualifying for the state singles tournament. The top five singles players and doubles team advance to the state tournament.
Berry, who lost her second match on Thursday, defeated Ursuline freshman Kim Ezzo in the first round of Saturday's losers' bracket before losing to Aleman.
Cardinal Mooney's top doubles team of Brittini and Rebecca Brocker also lost in the fifth-place match, falling to Gates Mills Hawken, 6-3, 7-5.
