RAY SWANSON | Keystoner Seven Titans inducted into HOF
Last weekend was one to remember for seven former Westminster College standout athletes as they were inducted into the Titan Sports Hall of Fame.
The Class of 2003 was introduced at halftime of the Westminster-Washington & amp; Jefferson football game and later honored again at a banquet on campus.
The seven inductees were Jay DeBolt (1957); Aldridge Jones (1994); Jennifer McNatt Laidlow (1994); Earl Mayer Jr. (1965); Booker Newberry (1995) Lisa Legarsky (1994) and Ralph Veights (1954).
Following is a brief summary of each athletes achievements:
DeBolt was a four-year letterman in both football and track. In track he captured the Tri-State championship in the low hurdles and high hurdles, and was undefeated in the high hurdles in 1956 while leading the Titans to three straight Tri-State titles (1955-1957). He was the leading scorer on the track team all four years. In football, he was a member of the first undefeated team in school history in 1953 and suffered just one loss in four years. He resides in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Two national title games
Jones was a football standout for the Titans in the early 1990s, playing on one undefeated team (1992) and two teams which advanced to the national championship game (1990, '93). a three-year starter and four-year letterman as a defensive back, he posted career totals of 127 solo tackles, 84 assists, 37 pass break-ups and 20 interceptions. He was also an outstanding kickoff and punt returner. He was a two-time NAIA first team All-America (1992-93). He resides in Ocala, Fla.
Laidlaw was an NAIA All-District 18 selection in softball and volleyball, earning three first-team laurels in volleyball (1992-94) and a second-team berth in softball (1991). She still holds the softball career records in hits (123) and at-bats (348). Her .353 career batting average ranks third all-time at Westminster. She is an elementary teacher and resides in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Mayer was a four-year letterman for the Titan golf team. He captured a pair of West Penn Conference titles, firing a 74 at the league meet as a freshman. He posted an undefeated match season in 1963 before going 10-1 and placing second at the WPC Tournament in 1964. He resides in East Aurora, N.Y.
Newberry was also a two-sport standout in basketball and track and field. He is a member of the Titans 1,000-point club and is 27th all-time with 1,049 points despite playing only three seasons. He led the 1993-94 squad to a 25-3 record and an appearance in the NAIA tournament in Tulsa, Okla. He is a graduate of South High and lives in Poland.
Volleyball standout
Legarsky made her mark on the volleyball court as a two-time All-NAIA District 18 first team selection. She also served as captain, was named Team MVP her junior and senior years. She also played basketball for the Lady Titans. She resides in Sharon.
Veights was a four-year letterman as offensive and defensive guard for the football team. A three-time all-district first-team selection, he was also named the top interior lineman in the district in 1951 and was co-captain of the undefeated team in 1953. He resides in Moon Township.
