NHL ROUNDUP | Saturday's other games
Bruins 1, Panthers 1
SUNRISE, Fla.-- Olli Jokinen scored early in the third period to lift the Florida Panthers into a tie with the Boston Bruins. Sergei Samsonov scored for the Bruins, who failed to win at least one of their first three games (0-2-1) for the first time since 1999-00 when Boston didn't get its first win until its 10th game. Florida goalie Roberto Luongo made 32 saves. Andrew Raycroft, making his first start of the season for the Bruins, stopped 34 shots. Raycroft replaced Felix Potvin at the start of the third period in Fridays 5-1 loss at Tampa Bay. Florida's Kristian Huselius had the best chance in overtime, missing on a breakaway.
Canadiens 4, Maple Leafs 0
TORONTO -- Jose Theodore made 21 saves and the Montreal Canadiens scored three times in the second period to spoil the Toronto Maple Leafs' season opener with a rout. The Maple Leafs, losers in the first round of the playoffs last season, were booed heartily as they left the ice. Mike Ribeiro, Richard Zednik and Sheldon Souray scored in the second for the Canadiens, who won at the Air Canada Centre for just the second time in 12 games.
Islanders 6, Sabres 0
BUFFALO, N.Y. -- Rick DiPietro made 13 saves for his first career shutout and Mark Parrish and Alexei Yashin each scored twice as the New York Islanders defeated the Buffalo Sabres. The win gave Islanders coach Steve Stirling his first NHL victory. He replaced Peter Laviolette in June. The Sabres were shut out for the second consecutive game, the first time in franchise history they have started the season with two shutouts.
Red Wings 3, Senators 2, OT
OTTAWA -- Nicklas Lidstrom scored Detroit's third power-play goal of the game 3:52 into overtime, leading the Red Wings to a win over the Ottawa Senators. Lidstrom's slap shot from the point beat goalie Patrick Lalime with four seconds left in Zdeno Chara's interference penalty, giving Detroit its second win in as many games. Tomas Holmstrom and Steve Yzerman also scored power-play goals and Dominik Hasek made 17 saves for his second win since coming out of retirement.
Thrashers 4, Capitals 3
WASHINGTON -- Ronald Petrovicky scored twice as the Atlanta Thrashers won in Washington for the first time, defeating the Capitals. Randy Robitaille and Ilya Kovalchuk also scored for the Thrashers, who were playing their first game since the funeral of teammate Dan Snyder on Friday in Elmira, Ont. Snyder died Oct. 5, six days after he sustained a severe brain injury when a Ferrari driven by teammate Dany Heatley crashed on a narrow city street. Robitaille added two assists for the Thrashers who were 0-7-2-1 in Washington since entering the NHL. Atlanta is off to a 2-0 start for the first time in the franchise's five seasons.
Devils 2, Hurricanes 1
RALEIGH, N.C. -- Sergei Brylin and Jamie Langenbrunner scored, and Martin Brodeur stopped 30 shots as the New Jersey Devils beat the Carolina Hurricanes. The defending Stanley Cup champions won their first game after opening at Boston with a 3-3 tie. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes fell to 0-2 for the first time since 1997-98. Brodeur picked up win No. 366 and improved to 21-8-5 all-time against Carolina. -- Associated Press
