KEYSTONE CLIPS Sharpsville mayor and council honor volunteer firefighters
Sharpsville Borough mayor and council normally pick one person in their community to recognize as Sharpsville's "Person of the Year," but this year they've given the honor to 59 individuals.
Borough officials announced that the entire Sharpsville Volunteer Fire Department has been named "Persons of the Year."
The firefighting men and women were recognized for all they do and all that they represent, said Mayor Kenneth Robertson, as department representatives were presented with a plaque and individual certificates at a council meeting last week.
Jack Cardwell, council president, noted that the fire department has just begun a fund-raising campaign to buy a new rescue truck, and he urged borough residents to be generous with their donations.
Road work
Just how much repair work do Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) crews do over the summer?
PennDOT's maintenance office in Mercer County cleaned 85,178 feet of ditches, cleaned 114 bridges, sealed cracks on 13 roads, tarred and chipped 143 miles of road and resurfaced an additional 18.5 miles.
There were 15 bridges replaced, 15,225 tons of road base repair, 991 feet of drainage pipe installed, 119 miles of shoulders cut and 705 miles of road lines repainted.
