GOLF Clemente is third at state meet
VINDICATOR STAFF/WIRE REPORTS
COLUMBUS -- Warren JFK senior Colin Clemente put the finishing touches on a spectacular high school career by finishing third overall at Saturday's Division III state golf tournament on the par-72 Scarlet Course at Ohio State University.
Clemente shot a 74 on Saturday, which followed Friday's round of 75. He finished three strokes behind Gates Mills Gilmour senior Mike Trivisonno, who won medalist honors in a playoff with Columbus Academy junior Cory Bradburn.
Trivisonno and Bradburn both finished at 146. Clemente, who finished second behind teammate Jason Kokrak last season, helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back state titles in 2000 and 2001. He has finished in the top five overall at the state tournament all four years of high school. Clemente shot a 75 on Friday's first day of competition, which put him in fifth place entering Saturday's final round.
Lima Central Catholic and Gahanna Columbus Academy finished tied at 628. Lima Central Catholic won its second straight title because of a lower individual score by its fifth-place finisher.
Junior Paul Marshall led the Thunderbirds with a two-day total of 149.
Div. II
Brookfield senior Colby DeCapua finished 38th overall in the Div. II tournament at the par-70 Gray Course.
DeCapua shot a 77 on Saturday, which followed Friday's round of 74.
Hunting Valley University School shot a 5-under par 275 to win the team title. The Preppers' two-day total of 564 was 14 shots ahead of Hillsboro and broke the state tournament record by 19 shots. The previous low was a 583 by Lima Central Catholic in last year's Division III tournament.
Lance Johnson, a senior, shot a 5-under 65 to lead the Preppers and finish second in the individual competition at 135. Hillsboro senior Drew Balser shot a 64 Saturday and finished at 134 to win medalist honors.
