GATEWAY CONFERENCE Koutsos breaks record in Southern Illinois victory

CARBONDALE, Ill. -- Tom Koutsos scored three touchdowns as Southern Illinois beat Illinois State 45-17 in a Gateway Conference game Saturday.
The Salukis (6-0, 2-0) rolled up 358 yards on 57 attempts as Koutsos, who had 153 yards on 28 carries, became the conference's all-time leading rusher. Brandon Robinson added 101 yards rushing and quarterback Joel Sambursky ran for 92 yards.
Illinois State's Sha-Ron Edwards scored on a 16-yard run, but the Salukis countered with a 1-yard run by Koutsos for a 24-7 lead at the half.
Quarterback Mike Souza threw for 207 yards and a touchdown, connecting on 17 of 33 attempts for the Redbirds (3-4, 0-2). Edwards finished with 88 rushing yards.
N. Iowa 22, Indiana St. 14
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Freshman Brian Wingert kicked three field goals in his first game of the season and Terrance Freeney scored two touchdowns for Northern Iowa.
Northern Iowa (5-1, 2-0) held Indiana State (3-4, 0-2) to 142 total yards, but the Panthers weren't assured of the victory until freshman Dre Dokes intercepted a pass in his own end zone with 51 seconds left.
Freeney, who carried 39 times for 102 yards, scored the game's first touchdown on a 17-yard run in the first quarter and gave Northern Iowa a 20-0 lead with a 10-yard TD run midway through the third quarter.
Western Kentucky 9, SW Missouri St. 6
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. -- Matt Lange's 42-yard field goal with one second to play lifted the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
Lange accounted for all the scoring for Western Kentucky (4-2, Gateway Conference 1-1), with three field goals in as many tries for the Hilltoppers.
Southwest Missouri State (3-3, 0-2) lost for the second consecutive week in conference play.
