COLUMBIANA CORNER Mention of 'recession' prompts jab at Republican commissioner
Columbiana County Commissioner Sean Logan, a Democrat, didn't waste any time jumping on a miscue by fellow Commissioner Jim Hoppel, a Republican.
With the commissioners about to take a recess during a recent meeting, Hoppel mistakenly said, "We'll be in recession."
Logan laughed and cracked, "Your president won't admit it."
Library renovations
Columbiana Public Library staff and patrons are rambling about in 6,588 square feet of new space, prompting comments about the need for maps and sending out search parties to find lost patrons.
A $1 million addition took a year to complete, and after a two-week shutdown in late August, carpet installation and moving of book stacks, the new areas were opened for use Sept. 2.
In the library's recent newsletter, the staff thanked patrons for their patience during construction. "We appreciate your faithfulness to the library as you searched for a place to park or the latest location where we shelved the materials you enjoy borrowing."
Leadership conference
Fifteen students and two adult advisers from Heartland Christian School in Columbiana recently attended the association of Christian Schools International Ohio River Valley Region's student leadership conference at Skyview Ranch in Millersburg.
The students spent a weekend with more than 100 students from Christian schools across northern and central Ohio, participating in worship sessions and activities designed to foster communication, teamwork and leadership skills.
'Suspicious' activity
Salem police were asked recently to investigate what appeared to be suspicious activity at a home on the city's north side.
After checking, police figured out what had prompted the call. A woman was having her nose pierced by a friend.
