Hillcrest Cemetery project
The Ohio Army National Guard has completed a restoration project at Hillcrest Cemetery in Anderson Township, Hamilton County, Ohio. About 1,400 veterans from the Civil War to the Vietnam War are buried at Hillcrest Cemetery, about two-thirds of which are blacks who were denied burial in other places because of their race.
Under ONG's Innovative Readiness Training program, members of the 16th Engineer Brigade removed heavy growth, restored the grade in several areas, re-set headstones, performed drainage stabilization and erosion control, and improved access to the cemetery.
Gifts for the Yanks drive
The Ohio American Legion has begun its annual Gifts For The Yanks Who Gave program, under which it hopes to raise $250,000 to finance Christmas gifts and activities for veterans in Ohio's state hospitals, Veterans Affairs Medical Centers, Outpatient Clinics and the Ohio Veterans Home at Sandusky.
The effort is not limited to members of the American Legion. Contributions from individuals and businesses are welcome, said G. Reuthe, state legion commander. Checks should be made payable to Gifts for Yanks and sent to Paul Whitesell, the local program chairman and the state legion's first vice commander, in care of the Austintown American Legion Memorial Post 301, 3652 Oakwood Ave., Austintown 44515.
