STAFF/WIRE REPORTS
COLUMBUS -- Warren JFK senior Colin Clemente, a four-time state qualifier, shot a 75 (39-36) to place fifth after the first day of competition on the par-72 Scarlet Course at Ohio State University at Friday's Division III state golf tournament.
Clemente, who placed second at last year's event behind teammate Jason Kokrak, is four strokes behind the leader, Gahanna Columbus Academy junior Cory Bradburn.
Clemente helped lead Warren JFK to state titles in 2000 and 2001, as well as helping the Eagles to a second place finish last year.
Defending champion Lima Central Catholic shot a 311 Friday to take the first-day lead in the team competition.
The Thunderbirds finished 23-over par, four shots better than Gahanna Columbus Academy.
Paul Marshall, a junior, led Lima Central Catholic by shooting a 2-over 74.
Brookfield senior Colby DeCapua -- the only other area participant in this weekend's tournament -- shot a 74 (37-37) on the par-70 Gray Course to place 24th in Div. II competition. DeCapua is making his first appearance at the state tournament.
Hunting Valley University School shot a 9-over 289 to take a four-shot lead over Beachwood. The Preppers also led after the first day last year, but finished fourth.
Elida senior Ryan McGraw shot a 4-under 66 to take the individual lead, three shots ahead of Carlisle senior Brad Rogers.
The tournament concludes today. The Division I boys and girls tournaments will be held next weekend.
