PHILADELPHIA -- Mark Recchi and Michal Handzus scored power-play goals, and Jeff Hackett was perfect in his Flyers debut. Hackett stopped 17 shots for his 24th career shutout. Recchi scored the first goal just 61 seconds into the third period. It came seven seconds into a tripping penalty on Buffalo's Alexei Zhitnik. Handzus made it 2-0 five minutes later with Zhitnik again in the penalty box. Buffalo's Ryan Miller, playing in just his 16th NHL game, finished with 24 saves. Flyers captain Keith Primeau received a five-minute boarding penalty and a game misconduct for driving Sabres captain Miroslav Satan headfirst into the boards 1:42 into the second. Satan fell to the ice, holding his head. But he skated away on his own a minute later.
Panthers 3, Hurricanes 1
SUNRISE, Fla. -- Kristian Huselius scored 7:37 into the third period for Florida. Niklas Hagman scored the first goal for the Panthers. Viktor Kozlov added an empty-net goal with 49 seconds left. Erik Cole had the lone goal for Carolina. Roberto Luongo made 30 saves for the Panthers. Kevin Weekes stopped 23 shots for Carolina.
Predators 3, Mighty Ducks 1
NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- Andreas Johansson and Mark Eaton each scored in the second period and David Legwand added a goal and an assist for Nashville. Anaheim finally got on the board 42 seconds into the third when Rob Niedermayer scored his second this season. Jordin Tootoo made history as the first person of Inuit descent to play in the NHL when he entered the game in the opening minute.
Red Wings 3, Kings 2
DETROIT -- Steve Yzerman's goal with 1.7 seconds remaining capped Detroit's come-from-behind victory. Yzerman scored from the right circle off a pass from Ray Whitney after starting the rush in Detroit's end. Pavel Datsyuk tied it at 2 with 3:45 remaining when he redirected Nicklas Lidstrom's slap shot, about six minutes after Ziggy Palffy scored a go-ahead goal for the Kings. Dominik Hasek made 21 saves in his comeback from a one-year retirement. Los Angeles' Roman Cechmanek made 35 saves.
Capitals 6, Islanders 1
WASHINGTON -- Peter Bondra scored twice, and Jaromir Jagr had a goal and an assist for Washington. Washington also got goals from John Gruden, Mike Grier and Jeff Halpern. Mariusz Czerkawski scored for the Islanders.
Senators 5, Canadiens 2
OTTAWA -- Jason Spezza and Petr Schastlivy scored power-play goals in the first period to lift Ottawa. Chris Neil, Chris Phillips and Daniel Alfredsson also scored for Ottawa. Spezza, Alfredsson and Phillips each had two points for the Senators, and Patrick Lalime made 27 saves. Ron Hainsey and Mike Ribeiro scored for Montreal.
Canucks 4, Flames 1
VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Artem Chubarov scored a goal and set up Jarkko Ruutu's insurance tally. Rookie Jason King scored his first NHL goal, and Todd Bertuzzi added one for Vancouver. Dan Cloutier made 22 saves for the Canucks. Chris Clark scored a power-play goal, and Roman Turek made 22 saves for Calgary.
Oilers 5, Sharks 2
EDMONTON, Alberta -- Raffi Torres scored the tie-breaking goal and added an assist in his Oilers debut and Ryan Smyth added two goals for Edmonton. Shawn Horcoff and Jason Chimera also scored for the Oilers. Jonathon Cheechoo had San Jose goals.
