United Way begins drive with $147,061



NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- Lawrence County's United Way kicked off its annual fund-raiser with about 21 percent of its goal already achieved.
Volunteers reported $147,061 already had been pledged to the nonprofit organization, which helps fund various programs throughout the county. The group's goal is $700,000.
The United Way campaign funds 18 agencies in Lawrence County and provides more than 50 programs, including the City Rescue Mission, Moraine Trails Boy Scouts and Lark Enterprises.
The United Way solicits money from businesses and individuals. A mainstay of the donation program is a payroll deduction.
Money raised in Lawrence County through the campaign will be given to organizations in the community.
