PREP VOLLEYBALL Lordstown wins its first title in 12 years
LORDSTOWN -- Alycia Israel had 11 points, one ace and 17 assists in Lordstown High's 15-4, 15-5 victory over Southington, giving the Red Devils their first volleyball championship in 12 years.
The team's lone senior, middle hitter Janelle Beaver, had seven points, three aces, six kills and two blocks for Lordstown, which went 12-0 in the Northeast Athletic Conference. Lordstown's previous title was in the Trumbull Interscholastic Conference.
Also for Lordstown, Samantha Kistler had three points, one ace, six digs, four kills and two blocks while Christa Israel had six points, three aces, three digs, five kills and one block.
Heather Lynn was the top server for Southington (6-15, 4-9) with three points and two aces while Haylie Myers had two digs and four kills and Amy Holko had two digs.
Lordstown (20-2) is idle until Oct. 18 when it meets the Sebring-Mathews winner in the Division IV tournament at Lisbon.
Lordstown is guided by second-year coach Pat Keney, who spent 18 seasons at Jackson-Milton.
Struthers 15-15, Mooney 13-9
YOUNGSTOWN -- Junior Angela Monico had seven kills, senior Teresa Vargin had 11 digs and Amanda Cavanaugh, also a senior, had 18 assists for Struthers (5-14).
Struthers concludes its regular season today at Alliance.
Liberty 15-8-15, Brookfield 7-15-13
LIBERTY -- Senior Mary Massaro had 32 assists, Ami Markowitz had 18 kills and junior Chenelle Mills had 15 kills for Liberty (10-12).
Markowitz, a junior, also had 10 points for the Leopards, 6-10 in the Trumbull Athletic Conference.
For Brookfield (12-8, 8-8), Jessica Zebroski had 27 digs, while Pasquerilla had 23 assists.
The Leopards play in the Div. II district at Boardman High on Oct. 16 against the Struthers-Salem winner.
Hubbard 15-15, Girard 2-11
HUBBARD -- Traci Hassell had 13 assists, four blocks, three aces and nine digs for Hubbard (19-3, 12-2) in a TAC match. Kylene Hoch had 10 digs and Diana Conzett had nine kills.
Courtney Madden had six kills for Girard (13-9, 7-7), while Kristen Ragozine had six digs and four blocks and Erin Stevens added 12 assists.
Lakeview 15-15, LaBrae 7-3
LEAVITTSBURG -- Senior Megan Taylor had seven points, three aces and nine assists to lead the Bulldogs (21-1) who finished 14-0 in the TAC.
Kate Barnett also scored seven points while Whitney Keyser had six kills, Lauren McCumber one block and Lindsay Whetzel seven digs.
For LaBrae, sophomore Maddie D'Orio had three points, four aces, six kills, one block and four digs. Also for LaBrae (2-20, 1-13), Laura Bate, a junior, had three assists.
Champion 15-15, Newton Falls 8-4
CHAMPION -- Velda Morrison had 16 points, 14 aces and nine digs; Kelly Meyer had nine assists; Heather Pegg had seven kills and Lindsay Templeton had two blocks for Champion (11-8, 6-8 TAC).
For Newton Falls Brittany Romain had four points and two aces; Molly Lenarcic had two kills and two blocks; Gabrielle Chapman had four digs and Cathy Hardman had six assists.
Newton Falls is 3-15, 1-13 TAC.
