Sharon to delay vacating alley for Walgreens store

SHARON, Pa. -- The city planning commission has recommended that the city vacate an alley off Stambaugh Avenue to make way for the construction of a Walgreens Drug Store.
The project developer, Greystone Group of Cleveland, told city council last month that it plans to build a Walgreens store at the corner of East State Street and Stambaugh Avenue and needs the alley closed so the building can be erected across it.
Greystone will buy and raze several buildings at that corner as well, saying it expects to take title to the land by the end of the year.
The planning commission recommendation now goes to city council for final approval, and city officials said they will delay action on it until Greystone actually owns the adjoining properties.
The developer said its project will increase the total annual real estate taxes from that corner by $40,000 a year, with that money going to the city, school district and Mercer County.
