Purse: $4 million. Winner's share: $720,000.
Television: USA (Today-Friday, 4-6 p.m.) and ABC (Saturday-Sunday, 3-6 p.m.).
Last year: New Zealand's Phil Tataurangi won his first tour title, closing with a 10-under 62 for a one-stroke victory over Jeff Sluman and Australia's Stuart Appleby.
Last week: Tiger Woods won the American Express Championship in Woodstock, Ga., beating Vijay Singh, Tim Herron and Stuart Appleby by two strokes. Woods has five victories this year and leads the money list with $6,278,746. He has seven victories in 13 starts in World Golf Championship events. ... John Huston won the Southern Farm Bureau Classic, beating Brenden Pappas by a stroke. Huston, 42, is the 11th player 40 or older to win on the tour this year.
Notes: Woods is skipping the tournament. He won the 1996 event for his first PGA Tour title. ... Bob Estes won the 2001 tournament, closing with a 63 to finish at 30 under. ... Tataurangi is sidelined by a back injury. ... U.S. Open champion Jim Furyk won in 1995, 1998 and 1999. ... Chip Beck shot a 13-under 59 at Sunrise Golf Club in the 1991 tournament. ... The final two rounds will be played at the TPC at Summerlin. ... The Chrysler Classic of Greensboro is next week, followed by the Funai Classic in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.
LPGA TOUR
Samsung World Championship
Schedule: Thursday-Sunday.
Course: TPC at The Woodlands, Texas (6,386 yards, par 72).
Purse: $800,000. Winner's share: $200,000.
Television: ESPN (Thursday-Sunday, 3-5 p.m.) and NBC (Saturday, 4-6 p.m.; Sunday 2:30-4:30 p.m.).
Last year: Annika Sorenstam won the ninth of her 11 2002 LPGA Tour titles, finishing with a tournament-record 22-under total for a six-stroke victory at Hiddenbrooke in Vallejo, Calif. Sorenstam also won the limited-field event in 1995 and 1996.
Last week: Sweden's Helen Alfredsson won the Longs Drugs Challenge in Lincoln, Calif., when Pat Hurst four-putted the 18th hole for a double bogey.
Notes: Sorenstam will meet the final requirement for entry into the LPGA Tour Hall of Fame when she completes the first round, giving her 10 full seasons on the tour. The Swedish star, who also will be 33 on Thursday, had to compete in 15 events this year to meet the 10-year requirement. She won the Safeway Classic two weeks ago in Portland, Ore., for her fifth tour title of the year and 47th overall. ... Juli Inkster won the 1997, '98 and '00 tournaments. ... The TPC at the Woodlands was the site of the PGA Tour's Houston Open from 1985-02. ... The tour is off the next two weeks. Play will resume Oct. 31 with the CJ Nine Bridges Classic in South Korea.
CHAMPIONS TOUR
Turtle Bay Championship
Schedule: Friday-Sunday.
Course: Turtle Bay Resort, Palmer Course (7,044 yards, par 72), Kahuku, Hawaii.
Purse: $1.5 million. Winner's share: $225,000.
Television: The Golf Channel (Friday, 8-10:30 p.m.; Saturday-Sunday, 3-5 a.m., 8-10:30 p.m.; Monday, 2:30-4:30 a.m.).
Last year: Hale Irwin won the tournament for the third straight year, beating Gary McCord on the first hole of a playoff.
Last event: Craig Stadler won the Greater Hickory Classic on Sept. 28, beating Larry Nelson by two strokes. The 50-year-old Stadler won the Senior Players Championship in July and took the PGA Tour's B.C. Open the following week.
Notes: Jan Stephenson accepted a sponsor's exemption to become the first female player in a Champions Tour event. The 51-year-old Australian won the last of her 16 LPGA Tour titles in 1987. She is a three-time major champion. ... The tournament moved to Turtle Bay two years ago after 14 years at Kaanapali. ... The SBC Championship is next week in San Antonio, followed by the season-ending Charles Schwab Cup Championship in Sonoma, Calif.
