NEW CASTLE Monument for veterans to be repaired
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A monument dedicated to fallen soldiers from Lawrence County will be repaired.
Commissioner Brian Burick said plans to revamp the memorial at the corner of Court and East Washington streets have been completed by RCI Architects. Burick sought permission from the other two commissioners to advertise for bids for the work.
Plans call for rebuilt steps, a new sidewalk with the county seal and a cleaning of the monument, which contains the names of all soldiers from Lawrence County who have died in action.
The work is expected to cost more than $10,000 and will be paid for with money from a bond issue. Burick said he hopes to have the bid awarded by Veterans Day, Nov. 11. He was unsure when the work would be done.
The memorial is primarily used on Veteran's Day and Memorial Day for ceremonies honoring the dead, he said.
