Working-Class Studies
A $350,000 grant from the Ford Foundation will fund these projects at the Youngstown State University Center for Working-Class Studies from 2003 to 2006:
Completion of the transcription of oral histories from General Motors Lordstown workers.
Development of three new oral history projects targeting women and black Americans.
Continuation of the center's biennial conferences that allow academics and community members to present work on working-class issues.
Teaching of a working-class studies summer institute for college faculty.
Sponsorship for creating an online collection of the labor and working-class posters stored at the Center for the Study of Political Graphics in Los Angeles, with availability on the YSU center's Web site.
Collaboration with the McDonough Museum of Art to identify appropriate exhibits and invite guest artists to complete residencies at YSU when possible.
Continuation of work with other universities and community groups worldwide to promote and develop the study of working-class life and culture.
Hiring of two part-time faculty members to allow two center professors to work on grant-funded activities part time.
