YOUNGSTOWN -- Police confiscated 86 suspected counterfeit CDs at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday from a table set up in the parking lot of the Red & amp; White store at Market Street and Chicago Avenue. Van Muhammad, 52, of West Delason Avenue was issued a citation charging him with criminal simulation. Muhammad told police the CDs were legitimate, but the officers believe the CDs were copies, based on the packaging, lack of recording industry security tape, quality of the covers and missing trademarks.
New lights on highway
VIENNA -- The Ohio Department of Transportation is installing lights on 32 100-foot towers to illuminate the ramps at state Routes 11 and 82. The lights are part of a $1.3 million improvement project, which included repaving the ramps. Installation of the lights is expected to be completed mid-November, an ODOT spokeswoman said.
Sprinkler system set off
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 14-year-old girl at Lincoln Place on East Indianola Avenue used a lighter to set off the sprinkler system at 10:30 p.m. Tuesday, which caused an evacuation of the place and $15,000 in water damage, reports show. The facility accepts youngsters from juvenile courts and children's services bureaus. The girl, placed by a Toledo children's services bureau, told police she set off the sprinklers because she felt like getting some attention. She faces charges of inducing panic and false alarm.
House OKs Blasdel bill
COLUMBUS -- Doctors of podiatry would be able to admit patients to hospitals under a bill sponsored by state Rep. Charles Blasdel, R-East Liverpool, and approved 93-0 Tuesday by the Ohio House. Under current law, only medical doctors, osteopaths and dentists on a hospital's staff can admit patients. A podiatrist, a medical professional who specializes in foot care and the treatment of foot disorders, may not independently admit a patient but may co-admit a patient along with a doctor as long as the doctor and the podiatrist are on the hospital staff. The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
Meeting date changed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission has changed its meeting date, moving it up from Friday to Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Mahoning County Annex Office Building, 2801 Market St.
Art teachers workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Steel Valley Art Teachers Association will have a watercolor workshop for teachers with Christopher Leeper from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Friday. Geography Careers Night
YOUNGSTOWN -- The geography department at Youngstown State University will have a public Geography Careers Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Ohio Room in Kilcawley Center. During the first hour, six YSU alumni will discuss their careers and how their undergraduate training played a role in their career choices. An informal session will follow. Sandwiches will be provided.
Autism workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- Potential Development Program, a private nonprofit Youngstown-Mahoning Valley United Way agency that provides services for children diagnosed with autism, mental retardation, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders, will present a workshop on working with children and adults with autism at 9 a.m. Thursday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Hall, 343 Via Mount Carmel. Depression screenings
LIBERTY -- Belmont Pines Hospital, 615 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, will offer free confidential depression screenings from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week. The purpose is to bring attention to the illnesses of depression, manic-depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety; to educate the public about their symptoms and effective treatments; to offer individuals the opportunity to be screened for the disorders; and to connect those in need of treatment to the mental-health care system.
