SALEM -- City council authorized city parks Director Steve Faber to advertise for bids and enter into a contract to renovate tennis courts at Centennial Park.
Meeting Tuesday, council also passed a resolution supporting a Nov. 4 general election ballot measure for a 50-cent surcharge to help fund a modernized 911 system.
Columbiana County has a basic 911 system, but it lacks a database that instantly provides emergency personnel with key information about the location from which a 911 call is based, such as the address.
Attempted theft
SALEM -- Someone shattered the window on a vehicle and attempted to steal the vehicle's stereo.
The crime occurred on the 500 block of East Euclid Street, police said. It was reported about 9:57 p.m. Tuesday.
Salem Drug vandalized
SALEM -- A piece of concrete was hurled through the glass door of Salem Drug, 409 E. Second St., police said. The crime was reported about 12:51 a.m. today.
New lights on highway
VIENNA -- The Ohio Department of Transportation is installing lights on 32 100-foot towers to illuminate the ramps at state Routes 11 and 82. The lights are part of a $1.3 million improvement project, which included repaving the ramps. Installation of the lights is expected to be completed mid-November, an ODOT spokeswoman said.
2 plead guilty to rape
WARREN -- Two Trumbull County men pleaded guilty Tuesday to raping girls and will be sentenced at a later date.
Mark Hearn, 19, of Brookfield, pleaded guilty to four rape counts before Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Hearn was accused of raping two girls he knows, ages 3 and 6, in September and November 2002.
Giavonne York, 19, of Warren, pleaded guilty to one rape count involving a girl younger than 13 in August 2002.
Both men are in the Trumbull County jail awaiting sentencing after a background check.
Depression screenings
LIBERTY -- Belmont Pines Hospital, 615 Church Hill-Hubbard Road, will offer free confidential depression screenings from 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, as part of Mental Illness Awareness Week.
The purpose is to bring attention to the illnesses of depression, manic-depression, post-traumatic stress disorder and anxiety; to educate the public about their symptoms and effective treatments; to offer individuals the opportunity to be screened for the disorders; and to connect those in need of treatment to the mental-health care system.
House OKs Blasdel bill
COLUMBUS -- Doctors of podiatry would be able to admit patients to hospitals under a bill sponsored by state Rep. Charles Blasdel, R-East Liverpool, and approved 93-0 Tuesday by the Ohio House.
Under current law, only medical doctors, osteopaths and dentists on a hospital's staff can admit patients.
A podiatrist, a medical professional who specializes in foot care and the treatment of foot disorders, may not independently admit a patient but may co-admit a patient along with a doctor as long as the doctor and the podiatrist are on the hospital staff.
The bill now moves to the Senate for consideration.
Art teachers workshop
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Steel Valley Art Teachers Association will have a watercolor workshop for teachers with Christopher Leeper from 8:30 to 9 a.m. Friday. A hands-on workshop follows until 2:30 p.m.

Geography Careers Night
YOUNGSTOWN -- The geography department at Youngstown State University will have a public Geography Careers Night from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Ohio Room in Kilcawley Center.
During the first hour, six YSU alumni will discuss their careers and how their undergraduate training played a role in their career choices. An informal session will follow. Sandwiches will be provided.
Meeting date changed
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County Veterans Service Commission has changed its meeting date, moving it up from Friday to Thursday at 3:30 p.m. at the Mahoning County Annex Office Building, 2801 Market St.
